Babies: 3 - 6 Months

what's your feeding schedule?

My LO is six months and I exclusivley BF. I introduced cereal to him and he hated it. So, then I tried it with Bannanas and he loved it! He doesn't like it all the time, only when he is in the mood. I haven't started veggies, but I bought some organic squash today and planned on making homeade baby food. How much often should I be feeding him different stuff besides just BM.? What does your schedule look like? Also, do I just boil the squash and puree it? Stuff I should prob already know...thanks for your help.

  • I haven't started solids yet, but I have been doing a lot of reading.  They say to introduce a new food every 3 or 4 days so you can watch for allergic reactions.  He should only want to eat about a teaspoon and at first once a day, usually mid-morning or lunchtime, so you can watch for adverse reactions like tummyaches.  Also always steam your fruit and veggies as you lose most of the vitamins and minerals when boiling.  Then puree it with some breastmilk, formula or water.  Here is a site to help you:

  • When I started I just gave him 1 serving on solids in the afternoon. My pedi said to give solids 3 times a day. I still think that is a lot so we give solids in the morning (usually bananas or oatmeal) and in the afternoon (usually a veggie). I made squash by cutting the squash in half and putting it in a pyrex dish with about an inch of water. Then I baked it until it was soft (maybe 45 min.).

  • My daughter really just started digging on solids about 2-3 weeks ago. We started with one serving of oats in the morning, then twice a day (morning and evening). Now we're starting to introduce fruits and veggies, a new one every two or three days. She gets a fruit and oats in the morning and a veggie and oats in the evening. She eats until she doesn't want any more -- usually a few tablespoons of oats and a half jar of Earth's Best puree.

I never forced it on her. I would try a spoonful every now and then, but it wasn't until recently that she was CLEARLY into it, and that's when we started in earnest. In other words, she now opens her mouth wide for the spoon...she even opens her mouth once she swallows to signal that she's ready for the next mouthful. It wasn't until she started being so obvious that we upped her feeding schedule and the variety.
