Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Yet another Sleep question

So my daughter randomly has nights where she will sleep longer stretches.  Sometimes I get 5 hours, sometimes 7, and last night I got a glorious 9 hours!

I have not read any of the books out there that have all these methods of getting your baby to STTN.  But, I was curious for those of you who didn't do any special sleep training (outside of sticking to routine nap and bedtimes, etc) when your baby began STTN on their own?  I know it can happen...just curious how long it took once your baby was giving longer night time sleeps?  And did your baby go back and forth on length of sleep times before officially sticking to a good solid STTN??

TIA!

Re: Yet another Sleep question

  • If your DD went from 5-7 hours to 9, she might be on her way.

We didn't do any sleep training with our first and she went from those 5-7 hour stretches to 9 hours pretty early on. But she did that forever.  She slept 7pm-4am (ate, then back to sleep) until she was 9 months old! She didn't start sleeping 12 hours until 9 months.
I think our second is on the exact same schedule!

  • I haven't done any type of sleep training at all.  The only thing I ever did that was consistent was follow my LO's sleepy cues. At around 9 weeks old we got our first STTN which was a straight 5 hours, then at around 11 weeks she started going for 7 hours.  Then one day I woke up around 4am to pee & a thought hit me to try a dreamfeed.  I did & it worked!  So I did dreamfeeds around 4am & was getting 10 - 11 hrs our of her.  I've phased out the dreamfeeds at around 4.5 months & am still getting 10 - 12 hours of STTN.  I consider myself very lucky...my LO practically trained herself to sleep.  We didn't even go through the 4 month wakeful thing with the exception of 3 nights where she rolled her self awake, but we got through it quickly.

  • agree with the above...it sounds like your LO is getting there.  Mine started officially STTN at like 7ish weeks and started with 5-6 hours.  It over the next few weeks progressed into a steady 8 hours.  Now...its 10-12 hours!

I think its all about routine and getting something that works.  I put LO down between 7:30 and 8 every night.  I try not to let him do more than 1.5 hours of awake time at one time all day...EXCEPT right before bed...sometimes he'll do a little longer (unfortunately 2-3 hours eek) and on those nights he has slept 11+!

I never did any dream feeds and he just figured it out.  Sounds like you're getting there!!!!

  • My LO started STTN at 11 weeks. That first week he did it, 3 out of the 7 nights were STTN (10/11 - 6). A couple of times since then he's woken up in the middle of the night but it was because he was cold.

  • thanks everyone!  My gut was telling me that she will just eventually STTN on her own.  Last night she slept almost 8 hours, and her nap times during the day have been getting more consistent as well.  My gut tells me to just keep going with her cues, and she'll eventually do the rest!
