C-sections

Travel

When would you feel comfortable flying after a c/s?  After the last one, i didn't fly until DD was 10 weeks, which was obviously fine.   I got some bad news tonight and was told that my grandma has 2-3 months to live.  I'd be devestated if I couldn't be there for her funeral, but considering I'm having this baby in 7 weeks, that just might not be realistic.

Obviously I'm not being morbid and booking tickets home or anything--just looking for a couple of "I flew 3 weeks after my cs and everything was great!" stories (if there are any)

  • Are you taking both kids with you?  Flying by yourself?  How far apart in age are your kids?  With DS1 I flew when he was 7 weeks and it was fine.  He was the only baby and me and hubby both went together.  This time around I flew when DS2 was 9 weeks and DS1 21 months.  It was kind of hell but as far as the C/S goes I was fine to travel.  It was more about the baby/toddler madness making it difficult.

  • The kids are (will be) 3.5 years apart.  There's no way I'm taking a baby on a plane to Minnesota in the winter, so I'd probably leave both kids with DH and just go for 2 days..or take DD with me--she's pretty easy, and can climb in and out of carseats on her own.

  • haha - that's funny b/c when we took DS1 on a plane he was 7 weeks old and we went to MN in the winter (xmas).  :D)
  • I'm flying when LO is one month old. The tickets were booked before he was born when I didn't expect to have a c-section, and I really don't have a choice but to go since I'm moving. I'm pretty sure I mentioned it to the doctor at the hospital, and don't remember him saying anything about it.

I'm just curious - why would it be an issue to fly too soon after a c-section? Sorry if that sounds dumb, but I would think I would have read something somewhere if it was a problem.

  • We flew when DD was 6 weeks old to family for Christmas -- it was a 2.5 hr flight and during the height of the H1N1 scare 2 years ago! Then when she was 10 weeks old we flew to Europe when we had to move -- that was a 14 hr flight! So, 3 weeks after your CS might be more rough on you than the baby -- you would still be quite sore but I think it's one of those things you need to wait and see. I could barely get in and out of the car at 3 weeks post-partum from my c-section.

  • I think with a scheduled c-section, you could fly at 3 weeks just fine. I'd say 2 even, but to be on the safe side, 3 weeks.

    Sorry about your grandma :(
