Parenting after 35

TTC #2 at 40 years old

I just turned 40 years old, and we are TTC #2.  I am just a little worried because my cycle is now more 20 days compared to 24-26 days before when I had my son.  And I thought my period was going to start, but then it was spotting/light period.  I am starting back on prenatal vitamins.  I have even thought about getting Fertility Blend or Fertilaid.  Should I inquire about Clomid?  Or even Progesterone if I am wanting to lengthen my cycles?  For those who had a baby after you turned 40 years old, how easy was it for you to get pregnant?

Re: TTC #2 at 40 years old

  • I conceived DS at 40, gave birth at 41.  I felt like we were racing against the clock, so we decided to expedite the process and had 3 IUIs (all failed).  DS came about the "old fashioned" way...go figure.  I often wonder if we had let nature run its course, if we wouldn't have conceived earlier.  All told, I think it took about 8 months (following recovery from m/c).  We are currently TTC #2...keeping fingers crossed, though I am now that much older!  I don't know anything about lengthening cycles, so I can't help you there.  I am thinking about testing my FSH again to see if there has been any significant change.

    Good luck!

P.S. - I remember you from TTC 35+...your DS is adorable!

  • Both of my pregnancies were conceived easily.  I will say #2 was conceived about the time we decided that 1 child would be enough.  I just wanted to wish you luck!

  • I'm still a young'un(at 37 :P) but I wanted to say good luck!
  • We had both girls over 40.  We had no trouble at all, we weren't even charting or anything, but I know we are the exception.  Good luck, I hope it's easier than you fear!

  • I say go for it the natural way and then at 6 months visit your doctor. but a definite yes on the PNV.  Start eating healthy like you would if you were pg.

  • I was 41 when we conceived #2...we trying before that but I was on depoprovera after #1 and it took almost a year to get back on my normal cycle and then bam, BFP.   Good luck to you!

  • It took us two years and one failed IUI to get pregnant with DS (LO#2).  He is now 15 months old.  We contemplated having a third, and both DH and I are now 40.  We took the "whatever happens happens" approach, no charting, no temping, and after less than 6 months,  I am now 9 weeks preggo.  A complete shock!  My point is, you never know what will happen.  GL!
  • I am in the boat at Peppernut.  I had my last baby at 42. We conceived easily, but I know that we aren't the norm.  Wanted to wish you luck and hope it happens easily.  Good luck!!!
  • Honestly? I had DD#2 in April after DTD ONE SINGLE TIME with 2 (TWO!!) forms of BC with a man I had been dating for 3 months. And *this* from someone who the dr.s all said "couldn't have children"... hmph.

So- I say- Go For it! And are you sure your spotting/light period isn't already implantation bleeding? That's what mine was! Good Luck!!

Ditto this.  We started TTC at 39 and we conceived on 6th cycle without medical assistance.  I got my BFP just after turning 40.  My gynecologist gave me and DH scripts for testing right before I got my BFP because she was being proactive, knowing how much we wanted to get pregnant and how late in the game we were starting.  We ended up not needing them.  As others have said, we got really lucky, and know there are no guarantees next time around.

    Good luck to you!

  • I had one at age 39 and one at age 41.  With both pregnancies it only took two cycles to conceive, but I know that's unusual.

  • It took us almost a year to conceive DS naturally, and I was 38. I think it might have been stress or low progesterone b/c I got pg the cycle I really didn't give a sh!t anymore and had been taking natural herbs and using natural progesterone cream for months. No prescription meds or anything, and I had a textbook pregnancy and delivery (thank you God). Now I'm 41 and I've always wanted to have 2 children but DH has been dragging his butt on that issue for about a year and a half now, otherwise, we would have TTC #2 a while ago. But now DH seems to be finally on board and this is our first month really trying.

Like you, I noticed my cycles are shorter now and this first month I charted my temps and I think I didn't even ovulate, the temps were all over the place. So I'm going to chart a couple more cycles and if they're also annovulatory, I want to try Femara. So I have a plan somewhat, but I know for sure that I don't want IUI or IVF. So if meds don't work, I guess we'll be one and done. Which is fine, I feel perfectly happy with my little boy. It's just that a second one (possibly a girl) would be icing on the cake.

    Good luck w/ your decision!

  • I had DD at 39 yrs and started trying to conceive when she was around 1 yr old... my period never came back after DD was born so my gyno gave me provera to jump start my periods & clomid to regulate them when we wanted to start trying.  He was very proactive and wanted me to get pregnant again as soon as possible due to my age since we very much wanted 2 kids.  I was a little worried I would have trouble conceiveing #2 since DD took probably 8 months.  It took 2 cycles of clomid for me to conceive DS.  I had him at 41 yrs old with no issues...
