How many u/s do you have during your pregnancy?

In a lot of the posts, it sounds like many of you have a lot of ultrasounds during your pregnancy. I'm curious as to why that is.

My first u/s is scheduled at the 11 week mark, 2nd around 18 wks, and we go from there. I've had bloodwork done and everything was good, so the doc said no need to have an u/s till the 11-13 week mark.

Any particular reason some people have multiple u/s before then? I can certainly ask for them, I just haven't felt the need. My personal thought is that if the bloodwork is good, I might as well wait till the 11wk mark when they do the IPS (Integrated Prenatal Screening) with additional blood work/us.

Re: How many u/s do you have during your pregnancy?

  • I had two early u/s (5w4d & 6w5d). This was because I had two previous early losses and was seeing an RE.

  • 3 is standard 1st establish edd, 2nd anatomy, 3rd positioning for birth. There are numerous reasons why one would have more.

  • I have had 8 because I had unexplained bleeding at 8 weeks and was labeled a "threatened abortion". If I had a normal pregnancy, I would have had a total of 2. Trust me, I'd rather have the normal pregnancy...
  • If all goes well just the one at 18-20 weeks!

1 is actually standard.  There are still many places that will do only one, the growth and anatomy scan.  Unless you are unsure of dates, or there is a problem, there is not need for more.  Positioning can be determined by a well done exam.  I personally will have about 3...6wks, 13 wks, and 18-20 wks.

  • It depends. I've been seeing a RE so as of Monday I'll have had 5 u/s even though I'll only be 9w2d. If you are low risk you have less ultrasounds.

  • I had one at 6w5d that was a dating ultrasound. I opted to have the IPS at 12 weeks, after that the anatomy scan and I'm not sure beyond that, but that seems normal to me? This is my first pregnancy so I have no previous history that would warrant any further monitoring at this time.
  • Trying to remember..

DD1..20weeks anatomy scan. 31 weeks growth scan..33 weeks growth scan. 40wks [in L&D to make sure baby was head down].

DD2..8.5 weeks dating scan [thought I was 10.5]. 21 weeks anatomy scan..28 weeks low fluid. 30 weeks growth scan [measuring small]. 35 weeks BPP due to tach. I think that's it..I might have had another BPP at 37 weeks for tach [high heartrate] but I don't remember.

I feel like all of mine were medically necessary except the one in L&D to check position..

  • I would have normally only gotten the one standard scan at 20 weeks, but they found a cyst on my babies brain so I have to get another one in a few weeks to see if it's going away.

Trust me, you don't want a reason for a lot of ultrasounds.

  • It depends on what your insurance covers. Some places, like kaiser, gives ultrasounds like crazy but its to make more money. They bill the insurance company for every ultrasound or bill you for the remaining amount, which is like 200 dollars per ultrasound. A lot of other places wont even give you an ultrasound until 20 weeks, unless you are at risk. People who have a past in miscarriages also get ultrasounds more often. There's not always a medical need for an ultrasound, most of the time they just do em for fun and so they can see how big the baby is.
  • My doctor does an ultrasound every visit, so I got one at 8weeks 11 weeks then went to genetic specialist for nt and got one at 12 weeks so that makes 3 and I have one the 10th and my a/s 26 then every 4 weeks after that until 36 weeks in which i will get one every week until delivery.  every office is different as well as insurance. I am not high risk or anything just the way my doc does it and my insurance covers it so I am A-ok with seeing my lil bean all the time.

  • With my first pregnancy, I had the Sequential Screen at 12 weeks, anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  Then I was diagnosed with GD and was put on medication so was receiving non stress tests with quick ultrasounds weekly to measure amniotic fluid for the last few months.
  • This sounds about right... Unless you are high risk... You will only have a few u/s

I'm so sorry for what you are going through, hope things look up :)

I will definitely be glad that I am only having a few hearing all of these stories.

This. My doctor only plans on one, but last time I had to have a couple more b/c I was in a car accident at 25 weeks. I hope I only need one this time!

  • Just the anatomy scan for me, unless there's a need to check the position before delivery.

  • I only plan on two, but of course that could always change should complications come up.  The first was the dating ultrasound at 9w1d, the second will be the 18-20 week ultrasound to find out the sex.  Initially I really only wanted the one to find out the sex, but we couldn't resist the idea of seeing our little olive when they offered.

I know people who were high-risk and had what seemed like a million u/s, and I had a co-worker who didn't have any.  Just depends on the person.

  • I had an u/s at 8 weeks to see how far along I was because based off of my LMP and off of my positve OPK was different.

  • I had a lot with my DS because #1 they thought he may have down syndrome (he doesn't), #2 I had trouble feeling him move (found out later it was because of the placement of my placenta), #3 I kept getting dizzy and had low amniotic fluid.

  • With DS, I had 2 u/s...I would have had only one if I didn't opt to do first tri screening.  With this pregnancy I've had 5 already because of early bleeding & cramps. My OB has been great about giving me quick ultrasounds in the office if she can tell I'm worried.

  • With DS's pregnancy, which was healthy, I had one to date, the 1st tri screen, a growth check in the 2nd, another on the next week because he wouldn't turn and they couldn't get a good view of the chest and heart, and I think that was it.  So that's 4?  There might have been one more towards the end to double check positioning and do a weight/size estimate.  It should be the same for me this time around.  That's a standard kind of schedule for my office.

This! I had one at 8 weeks and then another at 20 and that would have been it, but I am now considered high risk so I have one every week.

  • I'm considered high-risk. that is why I have already had one u/s & have another one next week. I'm also going to have them often throughout my pregnancy. Just to make sure the baby & I are ok.
