Baby Names

Emma really so popular?

Sorry if this has been posted recently, I do not come on here often.  Anyway, we are thinking of naming our baby girl Emma Claire (big sis is Norah Grace) as we love the old, classic names.  However, my only reservation on using Emma is that it ranks so high on the popular baby name lists.  But, out of everyone we know in this world - family, friends, friends of friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc. - we do not know of ONE Emma?  Lots of Ella's but no Emma's.  My only fear is that we send her off to school and there are 5 other Emma's in her class...

Re: Emma really so popular?

  • Yes, it is really that popular. There were 265 baby Emmas born in the state of Colorado in 2010, making it the #4 name in the state (Ella was #10).

If you like it and don't care about popularity, use it. If you are worried about popularity, don't.

  • It is definitely very popular but I agree with previous poster that if you love it and want to use it that shouldn't stop you.  Its not going to harm her even if there are 5 other Emmas in her class, but she might end up with a creative NN or go by Emma Last Initial.

  • If having others in her class would bother you, I would find another name. Emma is quite popular. I know three under the age of two.
  • Emmas have reached critical mass where I live.

  • Well, the recent popularity polls are based off the last year or two, so the better question is, how many 1-2 year olds do you know? If not that many, than of course it won't seem as popular to you. My hunch is once your LO starts preschool or Kindergarten, you'll feel overwhelmed by all of them. I constantly hear "I didn't know any ___ when I picked the name!!!" Well that's because the popularity polls are based on newly named children, and most people don't socialize their infants in classroom size groups.

Yes, Emma is really that popular. It's a nice name, but IMO lost a bit of its style because it's become so used.

  • I'm a Stephanie of the 80's :) And went to school with about 3 in my class, 3 Jennifers and 3 Lindsays/Lindseys BUT as an adult I don't hang out with or know anyone immediate named Stephanie...there are sooo many people in the world who cares! If you love it and are set on it use it. You don't want name regrets! My parents still love my name...more than me lol I'm a fan of Emma, Emmalyn is on our short list! That being said our daughter is Isobel, popular names don't bother me. GL

  • I know two that are under age 3.

Norah & Emma sound lovely but Norah is much less popular. If it bothers you, maybe:

Eliza, Leah, Simone, Sonya, Eleanor, Clara... or even Claire Emma/Claire Emily??

    I agree with this!

I've loved the name Emma ever since Rachel and Ross named their daughter that on Friends. lol

I only know 2 IRL. One is 12...the other lives far away and is 2. It wouldn't deter me from using it if it were my fave.
