WDYT? Persephone

DH's favorite name.  We're a NN family, though, and there is NOTHING I'd do with Persephone that I'd want to hear.

Re: WDYT? Persephone

  • Persephone is my favorite Greek myth, but I don't think I'd name a daughter that. Maybe a dog.

I've never given the name any thought, but I'm along the lines of this.  I actually think it's pretty, but I have a REALLY hard time applying it to a person in our world today.   It would stand out, that's for sure.  It's just a matter of whether that would end up being a good thing or a bad thing.

This.  If you're going to name a kid the name of a mythological figure, make sure you like the myth!

  • I LOVE it and DH likes it but we think it is probably way too much. I would have nn her Sephie or Pers.

We are going with Penelope instead...which I think I love even more

  • I love Persephone.  Its on my list :)  Cant help with the nickname since I personally try for names without one.  I get people that call my DD Niki and I hate it.  Closest thing to a NN that she has is Kita...and thats because most little kids only get that part of her name out...except 1 of her cousins that call her Misskita :)

  • I think a lot of people would say "stephanie?" when they first hear it and that is NOT the same name.  just my first reaction. plus you'd probably want a good nickname handy....a 5 syllable name is definitely going to get shortened by family/friends.

  • This name is so fussy IMO. I'm just not a fan at all. I feel the same way about Seraphina though, and everyone seems to love it, so take it for what it's worth.

I do, however, like Penelope a lot.

I agree with this. I also agree that it's "a lot of name," and I'll add that it's a little clunky. However, I will suggest my nickname, Effie (my name is Stephanie).

Effie is a cute nn for Persephone.

  • I adore Persephone but a nn would be difficult. It might have to come from a mn.

I know a Zenobia (Z) and a Penelope (Penny). Love those names too - I'm so jealous that I have a "common 80's" name and these ladies are my age with such cool names! I have a guilty pleasure in Greek myth names

  • A Greek friend of mine's middle name is Persephone and she HATED it all throughout grade school.  It made sense with her family, but it was a tough name to have.

Also, the whole goddess of the underworld/pomegranate teasing...just nms.

Eeek.  Iphigenia was sacrificed to the gods.  Persephone's myth is at least kind of cool.

  • Not a fan of the underworld association at all, but strictly speaking sound-wise, it is not too over the top for me. It sounds much softer to me than Penelope (a name I want to like more than I do) and has a similar feel to me as the name Stephanie, a perfectly nice name! I also like Effie as a nn.

I mentioned that too!  I said "So you're naming your kid 'Sacrifice to parental hubris' and you really don't see the irony?"  They were not amused. But then, they won't be the ones being called 'It's a vagina' in middle school.

Oh, nonononono!  I didn't even think of that!

Mostly, I ignore stupid NN, but that would be hard to ignore.

Not that it matters but Ianthe is pronounced (I-an-thee)

  • Not a fan...it sounds a little pretentious/trying too hard.  I do like Penelope better.
  • I feel like Persephone is just "too much". Unless your other kids are actually named Bear and Stinkerbelle, it would be hard to have them next to such an epic name.

ROFL!  No, DS has a name that was in the top 50--traditional.  DD's name hasn't broken the top 1000 in a number of years but is also very traditional and not odd at all.

Most likely, our male name will be Andrew (Drew) and female will be Helena, Eleanor, Theodora, Honora, or Ginevra, if we ever manage to get pregnant with a sticky baby again.

Persephone wouldn't fit the sibs at ALL.
