I really tried to refrain from sharing due to getting people's unwanted opinions.
when we had narrowed #2's name down, I had one CW who was constantly bugging me (for months and months) asking if we had chosen one yet. When I finally told her we were thinking of maybe using Casey or Annabelle. She actually said "OMG Annabelle? Yuck. That's an awful name. Sounds like an old grandma".
Obviously I didn't put any weight on her opinion.

Annabelle is a darling name!
We didn't share either name before the girls were born. I almost wished we had shared this time b/c NO ONE can pronounce Halle. Everyone says "Hayley" when they see it or "Allie" when we say it to them. I don't think we would have changed our mind, but it would have helped to know that it's a difficult name.
When I was pregnant with Gabe, our chosen names were Gwendolyn and Gabriel. My dad didn't like them and said they were pretentious. It turned into a really funny joke when one day he tried to remember them and instead of Gabriel came up with Gaylord.
Yeah, Dad, I'm going to name my kid Gaylord.
We haven't shared the names much yet for this one. I know Dad will hate Vivienne spelled that way if it's a girl. His aunt was Vivian and he'll be quite happy to tell me I'm spelling it pretentiously. Also, he will despise Oliver. Good thing we don't care.

Is her name pronounced like Hal-lee?
I'm loving both Vivienne (spelled that way for sure!) and Oliver!

it's the Bug and Baby Belle!
I'll never understand why people think it's ok to A) bug someone relentlessly for information they clearly aren't willing to give up and speak so freely about their opinions on things like names!
We aren't really advertising the name we've chosen for baby girl (Adriana) but I will tell people if they ask. So far so good, but there is obviously still time for someone to tell me why it sucks!

I do not see the big deal about sharing names ahead of time if the only concern is people's comments... If you share the name prior to the birth folks will be more vocal about their thoughts but if you wait they will just say the same comments behind your back..
at least by telling people you have an idea of how people will react to the name and you can choose to change the name to avoid rude comments and/or thoughts or go with the name regardless of other peoples opinions.. at the end of the day no matter what name you pick someone is probably going to have something rude to say about it.. you can't please everyone..
