Cameras on Vacation

A little over 3 weeks til Disney World! I have always just had a pretty cheap (canon powershot) digital camera that I threw in my purse or diaper bag on vacation. I would keep it in a case in my purse and take it on rides and everything. I take a ton of pics so I like to have it with me at all times. Now that I bought my Nikon I don't know what to do.

If you were going on an "active" vacation (like in Parks all day) would you; bring both cameras and bring only the canon to the parks, bring only the canon and leave the new camera at home, bring only the nikon and just be suuuuper careful?

Re: Cameras on Vacation

  • AHHH! Have a great time I was just there in July and we loved it. I brought my Nikon and we also have a small handheld video camera and we ended up just using the video camera. The Nikon was to large and to heavy.

  • I would take both cameras.  I wanted to buy a neoprene sleeve for our dslr but didn't order it in time off of ebay and never made it to delaware camera.  I had 2 camera's with me and somehow managed to not take 1 family photo or any photos of me and dh on our vacation.
  • I am dying for a new camera! What did you get? Do you know how to use it or are you just learning as you go?

To answer your question...I would take both. Why have a nice camera if you don't use it, especially on nice vacations? Just protect it! We didn't take our video camera but that was because I couldn't see myself juggling both, and I am the picture taker around here! I don't do much with video anyways.

  • I ended up getting a Nikon d3000. I really love it so far. I'm definitely learning as I go and it's a sloooow process.

  • I think a vacation like Disney is a GREAT reason to have a simple point a shoot camera....so I would bring that and leave the DSLR at home. If you were going to be lounging on a beach somewhere and had time to really compose great shots - then I would bring the DSLR, kwim?

I know you usually say that you do all of the work with the kids and everything...so having to lug that around too would be pretty difficult I would think. I'd want something I could keep in my pocket to whip out really fast and then put away. You can bring batteries or buy them in the park...not have to worry about recharging, etc.

When I first got my camera and took it to a place where I wanted to just snap a bunch of photos to record memories...they didn't come out any better than what I would capture with our old Kodak point and shoot...I don't know if you are in a different place than that. But it took me a long time to really see the difference. But if you think the pictures are so much better to offset the PIA it is to handle kids + bags/strollers + a camera...then I would probably bring it.

If you think you will have a lot of down time...like after the kids go to bed. Then it may be a good opportunity to read the manual and mess around with settings. I can mail you my Understanding Exposure book if you want!

You are my go-to camera advice woman so I am definitely considering leaving it at home. There's been a couple times I do miss my P&S if the kids are doing something cute and I have to run to get the camera, take off the lens cap and set the mode (I'm trying to learn exposures, haha).

If you really don't mind, I would love to borrow the book and I would totally pay you for the shipping!

  • No prob..just pm or fb me your address. Maybe someone else will want it after and you can just pay it forward :)
  • I've lugged my big camera and 1-2 lenses to Greece, Paris and Ireland. On a family trip to parks...I would point and shoot it all the way. Camera gear is heavy, bulky and you will be pisssed if it gets stole, lost or broke.
