Pregnant after IF

Might need reality check (bad news at 1st U/S)

So, after the beta hell of the past few weeks, we finally had our first ultrasound.  My RE looked for about a minute and told us he didn't see anything.  He told me it was over and it was a chemical pregnancy.

The weird thing was, I saw something on the screen.  I thought I was willing the screen to show things (I saw a line every cycle LOL).  So I didn't say anything at the time.

On my way out the door in tears, my husband asks me if I saw a raisin shaped black dot on the screen in the upper left...I DIED, he saw it too!

To be totally honest, I wasn't completely sure what I was suppose to be looking for even, I was just praying we'd see a heartbeat.  When I got home I looked on the computer for pictures of what the ultrasound is suppose to show at 5 weeks, and sure enough my husband and I are sure that's what we saw.

What do I do?  Do I just go with the fact we're both grasping at straws here and the RE couldn't possibly have missed it, even if I don't think he even looked for a full minute?  Or do you think it's possible there was something there and he missed it.

Here is a link to a picture (I can't clicky on a mac):

This is 100% what we saw, maybe ours was a bit bigger, I know this whole post sounds nuts, but I really don't know what to do.  I so should have asked him what that was! I was too devastated at him asking me when I want to schedule my next IUI!! (So ridiculous)

TIA

  • At 5 weeks, our ultrasound tech and doctor told us that it was possible that they wouldn't even see a gestational sac at that point. What we did end up seeing was exactly what was in the pic/link you posted, which is a gestational sac. If you think you saw something, and you're second guessing, I would wait a week, and go back and try again. If you're early, then in a week's time if you're pregnant you will see something more definitive. Sorry that you have to deal with this though, I really hope your doctor is wrong!

  • I don't get it, you're only 5w?  At 5w you probably wouldn't even have seen a hb or fetal pole for that matter.  I think you should call them and go back to double check, asap!.  You'll never be able to sleep if you don't.  Then you'll know once and for all!

  • We didn't see anything at 5 weeks. They only did an u/s then to make sure my ovaries were beginning to shrink back down to size. At 6 weeks we saw what is in the picture you provided, only a tiny bit bigger. At 7 weeks we saw the hb. I would definitely not count yourself out yet. Best of luck - I hope it all works out!

  • I know that at my first u/s at 5w5d, we saw the small gestational sac and then after a LONG time, my RE found the yolk sac. She was so unsure that she called another RE in the practice to come confirm what they were seeing.

I think if you're only 5 weeks, it's awfully early to see much on the u/s. Can you request another u/s in a week or so, or another beta? I'm sorry that you're dealing with this uncertainty, I hope you'll get some answers soon.

  • another person who saw nothing at 5 weeks.  the tech though she saw what might be "sac like structure", but wasn't positive.  At 6 weeks we saw one sac and one maybe sac.  At 7 weeks twins.  Here I am at 27 weeks.  I say you don't give up!

  • Your betas started off on the lower side.  There won't be anything to see on an u/s until after your beta is at least 1,000.  That's why my first u/s wasn't until about 6 weeks and my RE said we may or may not see a HB at that point.  My second one will be at 7 weeks so that we can see a HB.

I would wait until 6+ weeks and do another u/s!  Good luck!

  • As a matter of fact I'm suppose to be be 6.3 LGL.  He told me a few days ago that it was impossible that I ovulated the day of the IUI since my numbers were so low (they were only at 6 on 9/6).  He told me I had probably ovulated a week earlier.  Since then he's been flipflopping over "your numbers don't make much sense for where you should be but it's really rare to ovulate a week after trigger."

I figured since there was a possible discrepancy on dating that maybe he'd just say it was too early, but no.  He was convinced it was over. I hadn't bled and the bloodwork came back today that once again it doubled, and my doubling time went from 68 hours to 47 hours.  I thought after him seeing the bloodwork he'd realize OK this can't be a chemical pregnancy, but no he wants ANOTHER beta, and said that likely, it just stopped doubling and that's why it appears to be doubling.  It's all very WTF, none of this makes sense to me.  He seems so overly confident that I lost the pregnancy, but how?  The numbers are doubling and I'm not bleeding or cramping.

I honestly don't know what to do.  Something just seems to off with my RE now that I got my BFP.

  • Hm, it sounds like it's time for another opinion.  I would definitely wait to have another ultrasound in a week or so to determine what is going on in there, 6 weeks is still pretty early in the game.  Good luck and I hope you get some great answers soon!

  • Thank you all for the answers!  I appreciate you reading through all of this.

  • Oh, and just as a side note.  He didn't want to do any follow up testing, I had to seriously push for it, he seemed to really trust the U/S, I'll probably just pay OOP to see another doctor for a second opinion until I'm graduated to OB!
