Free visit - worthwhile?

My insurance company called me the other day and asked if I was interested in a free home visit from a nurse.  It would be about an hour long, and she would go over with me what the signs of labor are, how to tell if it's actual labor versus BH, how to feel my stomach to tell what's going on, and what we need to count/pay attention to when I go into labor and when I need to go to the hospital.  I've never had a child before, so while I've read about the signs of labor and heard about them from my doctor, I've obviously never gone through any of this.  Does this type of (free) visit sound like it would be helpful for a FTM, or just a waste of time?

  • I think that sounds great.  I wish my insurance offered me the same!

  • My Dr. told me not to do this for some reason with my first.  I can't remember why.
  • I'd say helpful! With my first I definitely had a hard time determining what was an issue to be concerned about vs. just body feeling different from pregnancy, especially as I got bigger. With twins, I would definitely go for it as there's more of a chance for you to go into labor early, right? Free is good and if it turns out to be not so informative, at least it's only an hour, not full day. And they come to you!

  • Hmm.  I have an appointment with my doctor next week, so I'll have to ask her then if she thinks this is a good idea.

  • That is awesome! I would definitely jump on that offer. From my experience, that is a rarity. If my personal insurance actually offered me anything, I'd be weary :p

  • I had something similar with my last son...my insurance suggested it, told me it was free, so I scheduled a visit with a home nurse.  A few months later I got a bill from them for $150!!  I tried fighting it but they just kept giving me the runaround so I ended up paying it because I was sick of dealing with them.  It was not worth the $150 :(  I would make 100% sure there's no catch/copays.

  • I would check with your benefits person at work, just to doublec check. We have a program at our office which is called Special Moments. Even though the nurse does not come to my house, she calls me once a month to check on me. And if I have any questions I can call them at any time.
