Bedtime for LO?

What time do you put LO down for the night?

Up until a few days ago, I was feeding my DD a lot at nighttime, so we weren't bothering to actually put her down for the night til we were going to bed. Now she's been getting fussy around 9ish the past few nights. She's recently gotten a lot better with going longer stretches of sleep at night and has also (finally!) gained weight up past her birth weight. I'm wondering if I should try putting her down earlier and if that will help with the fussiness.

Thoughts?

Re: Bedtime for LO?

  • i refuse to let my LO nap between 7 and 10. it's rough and she's miserable. but then she gets a bottle at 10 and i put her in her crib for the night. i've done this for the past 2 nights and she sleeps unti 4 or 4:30ish then wakes for a bottle again. hoping this continues!

  • sleep begets sleep. I used t try to keep LO up until I went to sleep (9-10pm) and he would take an hour to get to sleep, I'd have to walk around holding, rocking and shushing him and do everything under the sun to get him asleep and he would stay asleep for 2 MAYBE 3 hours. For the past few weeks I've been putting him down earlier and while he is still awake. i started doing it at 8:45, then 8:30 and now I'm at 8:15pm. He takes about 20 minutes to get to sleep, it is fairly easy, just help him replace his paci if it falls out, shush softly and assist him if he needs help from waking up i.e. swaddle if I think he needs it, music or light rocking if he needs extra help. He has been sleeping in 4 hour blocks and I amazingly enough, the one night that I put him down at 7:30 because i was dead tired and he seemed tired too, he slept a 3.5 hour then 6 hour stretch!

The best advice I've received is- Recognize his sleep cues and put him down at that first yawn, glazed look, eye rubbing, or whatever it may be for your LO. For mine it is a yawn, when I see it, day or evening, I put him to sleep. He goes down easier, sleeps better, and is a MUCh happier baby, ESPECIALLY around and after dinner time which used to be his fussy time.

So you make your LO stay awake for 3 hours straight?

OP: DS2 goes to sleep around 9-9:30 lately. Seems to be working for him. Once he starts doing a consistent 11-12 hours I will move his bed time to match DS1 which is 8pm.

  • We start bedtime sometime between 6:45 and 7:30 - it depends on how well he napped during the day, if he napped on the way home from daycare (10 min drive), and how long he napped once we got home (usually no more than 15-20 minutes).

Our bedtime routine takes about 45 minutes, so he's in his crib between 7:30 and 8:15. He will periodically fuss for the first hour (loses pacifier, can't decide how he wants to sleep - side or back), but he sleeps until somewhere between 1 and 4. Then he wakes up 3-4 hrs after that, and then another 3-4 hrs (during the week, I have to wake him up at 7:15, regardless of how long since he's eaten to get ready  daycare).
