Got a sick one....tips?

R has a fever and is vomiting....never dealt with this before. How do I get the fever down if he won't keep anything down? Skip the Motrin until he can take liquids?

He is just hanging out on the couch watching shows.....one sip of Pedialyte make him sick. This just started before nap =(, I hope it is quick!

Thanks!

Re: Got a sick one....tips?

  • My SILs kids are always vomitting and she gives them either tylenol/ibuprofen as a suppository....can't remember which one it is that she uses.

  • Maybe call and chat with one of the nurses at your Ped office. I know in the past we have been told to use a cool/luke warm cloth to wipe their head and face...they said even doing a bath if you can.

  • Not sure if this is the case, but my sister's pedi told her to wait a little while after the child vomits before giving them pedialite (or any fluid) because their stomach is still churning, and anything inside of it will come right back up.

    Poor R, keep us posted!

  • How high is the fever? R spikes high ones, doesn't he?  If it is pretty high, you could get a suppository.  I would do real tiny sips of pedialyte or watered juice.

The only time dd had the stomach bug was last december and the only thing she could keep down was bm.  So sorry you both are going thru this!

  • Maybe try popsicles?

I do advise against red popsicles or red pedialyte.  It's extra messy if it comes up.

I hope he's better soon.  I just let them lay around and watch TV.

  • Thanks everyone!

Holy cow, Pedialyte is sweet! I guess I would throw that up too!

So, his fever went up to 102.5 (JNK, he typically does spike high ones) and he threw up a few times. An hour after the last time, I offered water by the sip and it stayed down. He has since had 2 mum mums, cherrios, watered down juice, and puffs. Motrin stayed down with that and has brought the fever down to 100.

The fevers don't bother me since he had them last year (104-105*)....but the puking threw me for a loop! Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

I hope he gets a good night sleep and this is gone! My babies have been sick too =(

  • Awww.  Sounds like he is already doing a bit better though.  I would be ok with 100 fever too.  Hope you all get some good sleep tonight and tomorrow is better!  I think I would stick to the brat diet or bland foods tomorrow too even if he is hungry, at least for breakfast and lunch.
  • Hope that he is feeling better!  Evan has only thrown up twice...once due to vaccinations and once because I think he had bad milk at a restaurant, so I am not help there.
