xp: If you had PIH/Pre-E

...did your ob/mw comment on when you should time your next pregnancy?

My MW told me to wait at least 2 years to allow my body the maximum time to recoup in order to best prevent having pre-e again.  This would make my children like 3 years apart, which I feel is a bit long.

My BFF, who is also a MW, and my doula, recently learned at a continuing ed seminar that new research is suggesting that your blood vessels change during pg, and that if you get KU again within 1 year, before the blood vessels completely return to normal, that you will minimize your chances of having pre-e/pih again.  This would make my children a little less than 2 years apart.  But getting KU again within one year sounds so SOON!  I guess I would really like to wait till LO was like 18 months.

So, did anyone else get advice on when to have the next LO in regards to preventing PIH/Pre-E?

Re: xp: If you had PIH/Pre-E

  • Good question. I'll be interested to see what people say since I had Pre-E. One of my friends (who is a midwife/doula) said the theory she'd read on Pre-E was that the mother's body wasn't recognizing the father's genetics, so that's why fewer second pregnancies have pre-E.

For us to be financially stable and sane enough to consider another LO, it will be another 3-4 years, so I have no idea. I think my OB knew that too (I teach with her brother-in-law, and it's a small town, so people know what it's like for women to try to have kids and teach at the college), so the only talks I got were about NOT getting pregnant. Like, very specific on how to take the mini-pill at the same time every day, etc.

reading it now :-) I just Googled: Pre-Eclampsia time between pregnancies (not in quotation marks), and lots of interesting articles came up.

  • I had high BP my entire first pregnancy and was on meds.  Torward the end I developed pre-e.  The morning I was going to have a c/s because of the pre-e, my water broke and I went into labor on my own - although that didn't matter because I developed other complications and ended up with a c/s anyway after several hours of labor.

No one mentioned to me that I should wait a specific amount of time before having my next.

We started trying for #2 when DS was 19 months old.  I found out I was pregnant the week of my DS's 2nd birthday and DD was born when DS was 2 yrs, 8 mo.  I did not have any blood pressure issues with DD and did not have pre-e.  She was a repeat c/s at 39 weeks.

  • i was given the standard rule of 1 year, but that's because i had a c-section, not because of the pre-e.  that said, i'm terrified to be pregnant again, so who knows what we're going to do.

  • I was told wait a year (that's what they prefer) and that I would most likely have pre E again.

Now I don't want any one flamming with me I am going by what my OB said.  Last time I mentioned my OB saying I will have it again I got bombarded with "NO YOU DON"T/CAN"T your OB is wrong.  Well my OB is the medical Dr. and some women on line are not so please don't go there.  :)

I will have to read the article.....

  • I had Pre-E and my ob never once said or suggested I wait however long..  and she is quite thorough. I waited to space them so they were a little over 3 years apart, and it's worked out wonderfully.
