Anybody else Inundated with Fundraisers?

My 3 year old started Preschool earlier this month.  They send him home with a folder everyday.  So far, I got a couple forms to sign and 2 learning-related homework assignments.  The rest was STUFFED to the gills with fundraisers  including:  QSP Magazine sales, Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough sales, Market Day food sales, Chik-Fila calendars, and Kidstuff coupon books....
Wow thats a lot of fundraisers.  I most likely won't be selling anything... I mean he's only 3.  I think he's supposed to be learning school stuff and reading - not selling.  Maybe once he gets to elementary school we might.  Anybody else getting this?  I think it's a bit overkill I mean we do pay tuition at the school why are they doing so much?

  • I can relate!  DD attends an International School and because they are fairly new and are in the process of expanding it means lots and LOTS of fundraising.  This is her second year at the school so I'm not shocked; but last year I couldn't believe it when she was sent home with her first fundraising packet after only a week of school!  As a part of the tuition/fees, each student is required to raise a minimum of $600 each year.  A portion of the total sales is applied to the $600 balance, so say for the first fundraiser you sold $200 worth of products; 45% of that $200 would be applied to the $600 balance.  There are SEVERAL fundraisers throughout the school year so there's plenty of opportunities to reach $600.  Your goal is to reach the $600 mark or else you'll have to come out of pocket to pay the difference.  You also have the option to just write a $600 check and avoid the fundraising if you want to.  (We did that last year.)

  • Well that's cool at least you get something out of the deal  (other than some piddly prizes - like a bracelet or a pencil for selling lol).  $$ off tuition is good.  I was thinking if they gave us a discount off the tuition, then ok.  But they don't do that.  So far I haven't seen an actual requirement for a certain amount, but I'm guessing once they get to higher grade levels, it will be more pressure to sell a certain amount.

  • My DD's school does a bunch of fundraisers too, and I find it super annoying.  I participate in the one mandatory fundraiser by buying all the tickets ($40) myself.  This way, not only to I not have to bug all my friends and family to buy these stupid tickets, but I don't feel bad for not buying from all their kids.  I just cannot get on board with over priced wrapping paper and cookie dough.

  • DD's school does a lot of fundraising.  The state we live in spends over $9,000 per kid for public school education.  The tuition at DD's school is around $7,500 per year and provides a much better quality of education.  So, fundraising helps the school fund the things that tuition doesn't cover like, new flooring, improvements to the playground, technology upgrades, etc.

When we were touring schools to determine what school to choose every single school was upfront about fundraising and parental commitments, so none of the fundraising has been a surprise.

  • Yeah, we've already gotten Market Day and Scholastic Book Club stuff, and then last week he came home with the magazine sales thing. Their goal is for each child to sell SIX subscriptions. Confused

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • Personally at this age I would rather write a check with the exception of otis spunkmeyer cookies.  those are pretty good.

  • Wow that is a ton so soon!  We got a packet to sell coupon books at parents orientation and I thought that was bad!

The only other thing we got is order forms for Scholastic Book Club, but every order gets the classroom a free book and DD loves books, so I dont mind ordering.

  • DS's school only does two fundraisers per year (Fall & Spring).  I'm very involved in the PTF (this is similar to the PTA) and we do two fundraisers per year (yard sale this fall---probably a car wash in the spring).

  • I just find out what their fundraising budget is for each child for a year.  Then I write a check for 2X that amount and am done with it for the year.  I hate asking people for money and buying stuff I don't want.  DD's school was $75 per child this year, which means I could sell $150 worth of stuff or write a check and cover 2 kids.
  • DD started in August and at pre-registration they gave us a wrapping paper packet for fundraising... since then it seems like we get book fair papers every other day, t-shirts for the booster club at least once a week and raffle tickets for miscellaneous things in between. I know, since she is at a private school they live on fundraisers and donations, but sometimes it seems a bit excessive!
