Intense cravings for sugary stuff. Anyone else??

Pre-pregnancy, I was a vegetarian health nut.  I'd have a cookie once in a blue moon but rarely craved/ate sweets.  I hadn't had a soda in about 5 years.  Fast forward to third tri.  I get these INTENSE cravings for baked goods and Dr. Pepper that have to be satisfied, otherwise I can't think about anything else.  Here's the weirdest part... I sometimes dream about the sugary drink from my 1-hour glucose test!!!  I want to take a bottle home with me and drink it over ice.  Anyone else feeling the same way?  Want to split a banana nut muffin? Wink

  • LOL! I can't get enough pumpkin pie :) DH always picks up pumpkin muffins for me too!

  • LOL! Pre pregnancy I didn't eat refined sugar except on special occassions (holidays, birthdays, etc.)... but last night, I was telling my husband that I wanted to make and eat a cake - NOT a cupcake... but a cake!

    Also, I dreamed about eating a donut last night.

  • I needed a lot of candy for a long time.  When I failed my 1-hour, that kicked me out of the candy cravings.  Even though I passed my 3-hour, I still don't want candy!!

  • Absolutely. I wasnt as into sugary stuff before i was pregnant, I did enjoy the salty things though! And this just started in my third trimester with the sugar addiction as well! unfortunately its also halloween season....so the candy is everywhere..taunting me...this baby needs to come soon or I may be 15 lbs heavier than i should be after the baby....
  • Try eating more protein.  Apparently not eating enough protein can cause cravings for sweets.

    That's funny because I have been daydreaming about going to the store and buying a Betty Crocker Devil's Food cake and eating the entire thing with that delicious frosting, along with an ice cold glass of milk.  But now that I'm having gall bladder attacks, I can't eat anything delicious - just teeny tiny bird-like meals low in fat.  It sucks.

  • OMG...YES!! I have been eating those Halloween Mellowcreme Pumpkins like CRAZY!! Pumpkins are a vegetable, right??

  • I thought I was the only one; yesterday I went to Olive Garden and had a Warm Apple Pie with Carmel and Ice Cream... Ladies, it was to die for! lol!

  • I was a vegetarian too. I'm depressed to say I got the hugest craving for meat so I've been eating chicken, etc. I can't even believe it! I am sure I will go back after the baby is born. I've also never been a huge fan of sweets, but here I am with the candy, the cookies, the Dr. Pepper...it's so weird to me!

  • Oh yeah! The last couple of weeks have been crazy, and crazy bad for my GD! I thought it was because I had cut out all fruit and sweets from my diet since I got diagnosed. Last weekend I got the stuff to make no bake cookies and fudge. Luckily DH ate most of the cookies before I could devour them all. I'm trying to hold off on making the fudge for as long as I can. And for the last 5 days or so I would kill for a honey bun. I haven't had one in about 20 years but I want one more than anything lately. Damn you GD! I'm supposed to be able to eat anything I want right now and you're ruining everything. Angry
  • I crave sweets alllllll the time. I will make dessert and once we run out of one dessert, I will make another one to last the next week. Sometimes all I want for dinner is a huge cookie cake, but unfortunately FI is never down for that.

  • I'm with PP who suggested eating protein. And eating citrus foods also helps. Try eating a grapefruit and maybe your cravings will subside then. GL!

  • Oh me! I am like a PP, I make something sweet like every week....there always has to be something available. For example, two weeks ago was apple pie, last week was pumpkin bread, this week was oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I honestly cannot think of one sweet treat that I wouldn't eat right now. I am totally in the mood for pumpkin stuff right now. I promised myself if I make things, I need to give some of it away to friends and neighbors :) Then I don't feel so bad!

    I just made pumpkin muffins the other day. One can of pumpkin (not pie filling) and one box of yellow cake mix. You mix the 2 together (no ingredients on the cake box) and put in muffin tins then bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Heavenly.

  • YES! This afternoon, all I could think of was getting home and eating one of the leftover cake pops from my shower last weekend. For most of my pregnancy, I have not wanted any sweets. Donuts are usually my weakness, but I don't think I've had one in six months because it sounds gross and too sweet. But, in the last couple of weeks, I have been craving baked goods -- cake, cupcakes, cookies, all of it. I made some low-fat banana chocolate chip bread last week to satisfy my cravings with something kind of healthy.

  • In the morning, yes, I have sugar cravings. I have a skim latte which to me tastes sweet, and I put cinnamon and a little sugar on it. And lately I've been getting a large blueberry muffin. I try to limit them, but they taste soooo good to me, of course, because they are loaded with sugar and fat and calories:) But I only gained one pound between weeks 27 and 31, and my overall weight gain is 20 pounds, so I feel like I can indulge in my muffins!
