? for EPers

I'm still trying to decide, but I am strongly considering exclusively pumping. Breastfeeding was easy for the first few weeks, but then all of a sudden I developed an oversupply and over-active letdown and it has made my life completely miserable. I am constantly engorged and leaking, LO often chokes and fusses at the breast, and he's starting to develop symptoms of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

I'm trying everything I can to rectify this so I can continue to nurse, but I don't know how much longer I can stand this if my supply doesn't regulate soon.

My question is: My LO is a huge comfort nurser and often nurses in order to relax and go to sleep. How do you deal with this when you are bottle feeding? He won't take a paci (I've tried a few and need to buy some more to try). He typically will have a full feeding and then an hour later he'll want a "snack" before his nap, but he doesn't actually eat much. I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this as they transitioned to EPing...

Re: ? for EPers

  • I pay attention to how DD sucks on her bottle. We use the slow flow nipples and Evenflo bottles. When she switches to a comfort suck, right before going to sleep, it is very different and I can usually switch it with a pacifier quickly. Babies aren't born using pacifiers, they really do have to learn and it takes time.

  • Have you tried the playtex binkie latex pacifiers?  they are about the size of your finger (probably your nipple too when in their mouth) - and it took me forever to find them - but when i did it was the first and ONLY paci DD would accept.  DS doesn't really need them at this point thank goodness but my DD sure did.

For the oversupply - try pumping for a while first and then bring him to the breast - that way you get through the first letdown cycles and take the pressure off, and he's more likely to get at your hindmilk since the foremilk was pumped first.

Also have you tried a nipple shield to help slow your flow down to a rate DS can accept a bit easier?  I am pretty much EP'ing b/c I have the same problem.  I've just gotten to the point now where I'll nurse him once in a while so he still remembers how and when he's big enough to handle a higher flow bottle nipple, we'll try doing it more frequently b/c he'll be big enough to handle the firehose going off in his mouth ;)

  • Honestly, if you CAN BF- do it. EPing is hard work. I wish I could BF, but its not happening.

  • Try boiling the pacis a couple of times. I did this with the soothies and it made them super soft and now DD loves it.
