3rd Trimester

Flu Shot?

So I was wanting to get a flu shot before my daughter gets here, expecially since I always get sick this time of year, more than once, one right after another. I'm going to ask my Midwife about it Monday, but I had to ask you ladies first, since I'm impatient! Did you get a Flu shot while pregnant, is it ok? Anything I need to know?

Re: Flu Shot?

  • I got mine 2 weeks ago and also had one when pregnant with ds.  My doctor has always stressed their importance while pregnant since your immune system can be weaker.

  • My practitioner is recommending that DH and I both get them this year even though we never have before because of the little one joining us right at the beginning of flu season. DH probably will, but I have very bad reactions to the flu shots (hence why I stopped getting them several years ago) so I probably won't bother.

  • I got one last week, my doctor strongly suggested it so I took her word for it.  She told me that the shot they give is made from and inactive virus so there is no way that we will get sick from it.  The nasal version is apparently made from the active virus and not recommended. I have never had a flu vaccination before and I was fine afterwards.

    Hope this helps!

  • My OB strongly recommended it, so I got it last week.  You're supposed to get the shot if you're pregnant instead of the nasal mist.  And supposedly the single vial shots are better because they have less preservatives.  I got one that wasn't a single vial because I couldn't find anyone that had the single vial and my due date is next week.  I wanted to get the shot ASAP so maybe DD will get some protection while she's still cooking.

  • i got one when i was PG with LO but he was born in feb so i wanted to be protected through my whole pregnancy. My OB hasn't mentioned anything about giving them out yet this year but i'm sure in the next few weeks she will. I'm due in Nov and if they have the preservative free one i will get it again. Dh and Lo will get it this year too.

  • Flu shots are highly recommend for pregnant women from the CDC. I've gotten flu shots with my previous pregnancies and will with this pregnancy this weekend. I just go to CVS and get it done for free.

  • You absolutely should.  And anyone who is going to be in close contact with the baby needs one.  It doesn't matter if you have "bad reactions."  This helps out the baby, protecting it from something potentially lethal.

  • Yes, I had one 2 weeks ago. The only thing that is recommended is that you get the shot, not the nasal spray, preferably preservative free.

  • My dr is making me and my husband get one. I've never had one and it kind of freaks me out. Whatever is best for my baby I am willing to do.

It would be my first as well, but It's nice to know all these other ladies have had one while pregnant and have been fine. It eases my anxiety a lot!! And I know my husband is definitely getting one, I just want to do whats best for my LO.

  • Yes, almost all major medical organizations suggest it to women who are pregnant.  I got mine at work.  You just can't get the nasal spray, because that is a live virus.
  • People's reactions to the flu shot always puzzle me. Thousands of people die every year in the U.S. from influenza or related secondary infections, particularly the very young and old and people with compromised immune systems. If one little shot will help protect your baby, why not do it?

As a disclaimer, I get a flu shot every year

Also, side note - I do understand people not getting it when they are allergic to eggs or have some other severe reaction. However, people who complain that it makes them feel a little bit sick for a day or two make me roll my eyes. Really - have you ever had the flu? It is sooo much worse! Now imagine your 1 month old with it. Makes me sick just to think about that...

  • Actually got one at my OB's office yesterday before my appt.
  • Yeah, I will definitely get one before I deliver, as will DH and DS. I'm not taking any chances with having a newborn at the start of flu season. I am going to try and find a preservative free one-I think that is the kind my OBs office carries but I need to double check.

Keep in mind that after you have a baby, your immune system might not be functioning as well as it should, due to lack of sleep, not eating as well, and just being run down. So I definitely feel like I need the extra protection.

  • I will get one on Monday.  My OB practice does flu clinics so I'm scheduled during one of those.

This.  She also mentioned, if possible, we would want everyone coming in contact with the baby to have a flu shot as well (though I will not go that far).

I got a flu shot for the first time ever this year because of the baby.  I do notice that my immune system has been weaker while I've been pregnant, and it's also true that by getting the flu shot while pregnant, I pass that immunity on to the baby.  Had I not been pregnant though, I would not have gotten a flu shot this year.

One thing my doctor did say, though, is there are two types of flu inoculations--a shot and a nasal spray.  Only the flu shot is safe for pregnant women, not the nasal spray (because it uses a live virus).

  • I got one two weeks ago at my prenatal appointment. My MW asked if I wanted one. I also got the flu shot and the H1N1 flu shot when I was pregnant with my daughter 2 years ago.
