1st Trimester

Just found out I am Rh-negative.....

I donated blood last month and my donor card just came in today and it said I am A-, my blood tests have not come back to my Doctor so he does not know my blood type.  I searched if A negative was a safe blood type and it turns out since I am negative so will my RH.  My husband does not know if he is a negative or positive blood type but seeing how a lot of people come up positive I fear now the consequences of having a positive blood type baby.  I am reading as much as I can into the risks and that they can give injections for the antibodies my body might create against my baby.

I am going to call my Dr. tomorrow about my discovery and see if he wants to see me sooner then 2 weeks or if he wants my husband to do a test to find out his blood type.  Any ladies here that are RH-negative?  What has your doctor told you to do so far?

This. I'm not negative, but there is never a big issue with this anymore. They will just give you a Rhogam shot before baby is born and after.

  • It is really not even a slightly big deal. You get a shot at 28 weeks unless you spot in which case you will get one sooner and again at 28 weeks. If kiddo is + at birth you will get another one.
  • Yup, I'm O- so I got a Rhogam shot. No biggie! Seriously, it's a non-issue.

  • Ok great, thank you ladies for the information.  I cannot thank you all enough for the information everyone provides, I feel like im going to be a pro at this in no time.  The results should get into my doctors hands by this Friday and I am sure he will call me if he has any concerns, if not then in 2 weeks when I go back to see him for my U/S I will ask him about it.

  • I'm O- and I'm not sure what my husband's blood type is.  I had spotting all last week, so my doctor made me go in for the Rhogam shot.  It wasn't bad at all.  She said they used to wait until 28 weeks or delivery to give it, but now believe that it's important to give it to the mother if she experiences early spotting just in case.  Don't worry too much.  The most important thing is that you get it once you give birth just in case the blood mixes during delivery.  And just in case this might worry you, I researched whether or not the shot had any connections with autism, and studies showed that women who get a rhogam shot aren't any more likely to have children with autism, so we're good. FFS, no shot is linked to autism. Did you miss the memo that the doctor fabricated that entire study?

Ugh, thank you! That was a really ignorant statement.

  • I am o- and my husband is +.  I've gotten the shot once with this pregnancy with some spotting I had around 4 wks.  I also had one after a miscarriage.  At my first appt, they screen you to see if you've already developed antibodies.  If you have, they monitor your pregnancy more closely.  If you haven't, they give you the shots accordingly, around 28 wks (I think) before birth, and after, mostly to protect future pregnancies from what I understand.

I was worried about it at first but have since come to discover it is common.

Not to mention that the fake autism link was with vaccines. Rhogam isn't a vaccine.

  • My mum is RH-Negative, she found out while carrying my brother but everything worked out just fine, and that was 30 years ago.

  • I am AB- and my husband is O+. I am on my 4th pregnancy and have received Rhogram shots with each pregnancy. You usually get two shots... one around the second trimester and then another well into your third. If you EVER have bleeding, request a Rhogam shot in case your baby does have RH+ blood. From what I remember, a RH factor risks are higher in pregnancies after your first child. But, ask your doctor.
  • I am RH Negative and have had to normal deliveries. A Third on the way. You will be fine. You will receive a shot so that your blood does not mix with the babys blood. I received my shot early on b/c of spotting (implantation). It is nothing to fret over. Just talk to your Dr. tell them your concerns and rest!

WHOA, no need to be so catty.  It's not like those worries don't come to mind when you're new at this.  I know nothing has been linked to anything particular, but that doesn't mean concern isn't raised when something new is introduced to you. I was making fun at my own paranoia. Christ, have a little graciousness people!

  • I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but I didn't see it in anyone's posts.

I think it is very important to mention that first pregnancies are NOT affected in any way.  The rhogam is to protect against future pregnancies, so even if you find out after you become pregnant and this is your first, there's nothing to worry about.

Like pp said, you will get a shot around 28 weeks and then after delivery.  If there is any bleeding before this time, you will also get a shot then.

The purpose of the rhogam is to prevent your body from producing antibodies that can attack subsequent pregnancies if that babies blood type is positive.
