TTC while nursing HELP!--any advice?

Help! TTC while nursing my 7 mo old. Didn't want to give up nursing but still haven't had first period! I know my chances are slim to none... any helpful advice to get period back and prego again without having to give up on nursing? At this point weaning is not an option... am I stuck waiting it out? BUT the timing is right NOW! want kiddos close in age.Anyone have any success?

  • We're in the same boat, I'm really starting to stress out because I too want my kids close in age. AF still hasn't showed up and I'm trying very hard to keep nursing but I'm thinking more and more about starting to wean. It makes me a little frustrated and sad because I want to become pregnant so bad and it's not very easy. I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you but want you to know your not alone. I'm wishing you tons of Good Luck!!

  • I started getting my period back at 7 months when I switched to nursing or pumping 4 to 5 times a day.  She's been nursing 4 times a day solid since 8.5 months (6,10,2,6) and I got my BFP last week.

We are still nursing although supply is down.  She doesn't seem to mind too much.  I have her sitter give her milk to supplement and she's fine.  But she is very into solids, has been since 8 months.  We started her solids with Baby Led Weaning and I give it a lot of credit on her food intake.  She eats better than I do for sure.

  • Nursing does not keep you from ovulating.  Last October we had ds at 24 weeks, his due date was January 19th.  We were celebrating ds doing so well with some margaritas and ended up pregnant with dd.  I will be having her any day now.  I am in the early stages of labor.  I never once had a period after I gave birth to ds.
  • I weaned DS at 15 months in order to get my cycles back. I had not had a PP period and I had cut down to just 1 nursing session a day for over a month. 2 weeks after I weaned, I got AF.

While it is possible to ovulate while nursing, just keep in mind that while nursing and potentially even months after you wean, your cycles can be irregular. My luteal phase was pretty short the first 2 cycles after weaning and I took Vitamin B6 to try to lengthen it. Luckily, we were pregnant on the 3rd cycle post-weaning.

I really wanted our kids 18 months apart, but weaning DS any earlier than 15 mos wouldn't have been the right decision for either of us. So I waited until he was sleeping through the night and was distracted enough during the day. He had to find a way to put himself to sleep for naps and that was tough for a week, but he got through it.

  • I would call your OB. Speak with them. They'll have plenty of suggestions.

I still nurse my 14 month old DD once a day and I got pregnant after 2 cycles. I did get AF when she was 6 months old, but like everyone said, that does not always mean ovulation. Even if you started AF, sometimes nursing can prevent ovulation due to hormone levels (I think, at least thats what they told me). However, my doctors office did tell me that since I was getting regular periods wile nursing, it was pretty likely that I was ovulating.

  • I nursed DD and DS and got pregnant before getting a PP period both times. We'll have 3 under 3 in February. I haven't had a period since August 2008, so its definitely possible!!

  • Got AF when DS was 6 mos and then KU a couple months later.  Cycles were regular right away.  If you are hoping to continue to nurse, you might not want to get pregnant so fast though.  I did not think about that aspect of things and had a really hard time nursing (it was painful and had lots of supply issues) after KU.  My supply tanked just from AF alone actually.  I did make it until DS was 13 months but I would have liked to supply him with more milk from 8-13 months and not have had it be stressful and painful to do so.
  • I agree with PP about waiting if you really want to continue to nurse. My supply completely dried up by the time I was 6-7 weeks along and we had to wean DS at 11 months. We'll wait to TTC with the next baby so that it can get at least a year of breastmilk. Some women can continue to breastfeed during pregnancy, but some can't.
