Weird exchange @ DC this morning

I was getting out of the car and it was raining. A dad, who had just dropped his baby off, offered to hold his umbrella for me. Since I forgot one like a doofus, I accepted. As we're walking up to the building, he waves at C and says "hi there, how are you?" and then he looks at me, points at C and says, "she?" I say, "he." Then he goes, "Oh. How old is he, 5 months?" I say, "No, he's 8 months." He looked surprised. Not sure why, since C is a hefty, nearly 23 lb 8 month old. I'm guessing this guy's baby (she's like 2 months old) is the first one he's been around.

That's the first time C has gotten mistaken for a girl, too.. just sort of caught me off guard. I thought his dark blue pants and rust colored shirt looked pretty boyish today. Meh.

I was taking the girls home from daycare yesterday and I was carrying Isla in her carseat while Emma walked. Well Emma, who is normally on the ball, was taking her sweet time to follow me. It got even slower when she caught the eye of a cute 3-4 year old boy. They locked eyes and he watched her, she watched him as she walked ever so slowly towards me. I'm steadily calling her name, she's oblivious. After like 3 mins of this I'm like "Emma! Quit checkin out the boy at daycare, you'll see him tomorrow, we gotta go Pinkie!" She blinked, grinned at me and was back to her quicker pace to the car. She's not even 2 and already checking out guys....

Everyone is surprised when I say K is not even 7 months. She's in the 93rd percentile for height (I have no idea how, I'm 5'2" & DH is 5'6"). Honestly, I have no concept of size for babies because we don't have anyone else with LO's around us. My only other comparison is my niece (8) who has dwarfism so that doesn't help. All of our friends had their kids years before we did.

And I had someone in the store actually ask "boy or girl?" She was in head to toe pink. Confused

I dress the girls in girly stuff so when someone says 'he' and they are looking at Isla it kinda makes me go 'really?' I had one guy give me the oddest look when I told him Isla was a girl (she was dressed in pink and lilac) and he just scoffed and walked off. Ooook.

People mix up DS all the time too... age and gender.

Age confusion I can understand. He's 20 lbs (70th %) and 30 inches long (off the chart) at 6 months. Most people are shocked when I say he's only 6 months old. They're expecting an age closer to 1.

The gender thing confuses me. He's always dressed in definite boy clothes, but it's the hair. Apparently lots of hair on a baby = girl. Even if said baby is wearing camo pants and a blue shirt with a bulldozer on it.

People are weird with their expressions after you say how old they are. Everyone always thinks DD is a boy too. So much so, that I call her my little dude. At Lowes this past weekend when the cashier asked how old LO was and I said 8 1/2 months, she about fell over and exclaimed how tiny she was. She is small for her age, at 5 weeks early..but honestly...shes been in the 20th percentile. She's not THAT small. People are weird.

I've gotten both comments as well. "He" when she is wearing something obviously girly, like a floral print or head to toe pink and a shocked face when I say how old she is. She's been between the 90th and 95th %ile for weight and height since birth, so people expect her to be older, I guess.

If anything, I've learned that babies come in all shapes and sizes and to never assume how old a baby is by their size! I'm sure I used to make similar comments, but I've learned to ask and then nod and smile at the answer no matter how surprised I am.

I had my LO in a purple dress at church with matching headband with flower and had someone ask boy or girl???? I thought they were joking and laughed. He actually thought boy. He was an older gentleman so I'm assuming he couldn't see very well. Smile

Yep, I have had people mistake Ladybug for a boy. One time she was wearing a pink and blue courdroy dress and I had a pink blanket around her legs. People are funny.

I know exactly what you mean! There's a little boy at church who is 2 weeks older than Colin, but he's so much smaller. I think his mom said he's in the 20th percentile, and Colin has always hovered between 85th and 95th. They are so different, but developmentally they're very much alike.
