I am really upset, because I failed this test by a lot. Cutoff was 135, I got 170's. I am also angry about it, because I think the doc set me up to fail.
I'm only 24 weeks, and my usual doc said we were going to do it at 28 weeks. I had to see a different doc yesterday because mine was out of town, and he decided to give me the test early. I told him that I had just eaten lunch and had a big soda with it (I know, I shouldn't be drinking soda), but he said he didn't think it would affect the results. Then I took the test and felt awful during my 75 mile drive home from the blood sugar crash and the blood draw.
Now I have to take the 3 hour, which means I have to get there by 8:30 am when the office is an hour and a half away without traffic (I assume more during rush hour) and they told me to try to have someone drive me. My husband is trying to save his limited vacation days for when the baby comes, and there's no one else to take me.
I also feel like a total failure because I didn't pass. I am overweight and already taking lots of metformin, so I have no business drinking soda anyway. I haven't gained a single pound while pregnant, so obviously I'm not sitting here eating ice cream and cookies, but still. I feel like the worst human being on the planet.
ETA: I don't take metformin for blood sugar or insulin issues, I take it for PCOS. Stayed on it because doc said my body is already used to it, might prevent miscarriage, and could help protect against GD. I'm NOT normally diabetic or anything.
Re: 1 hour glucose test (kinda long)
I'm sorry you didnt pass and that no you have to do the 3 hour. I failed my first, passed the 3 hour though. Fingers crossed for you!
Sorry about the dr btw. Don't stress, and dont blame yourself!
ugh!!!
on the plus side, you really shouldn't be worried about results until your 3hr test-- i really don't agree with that doc, you shouldn't have done it right after eating!
as far as your eating habits-- there are always going to be slips... one large soda isn't going to hurt you or the baby-- now every day, that's a different story.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that!
I took mine today after I got the orders yesterday. My doc said I could've gone that day but I told her I ate cinnamon toast crunch for breakfast (I hadn't been to the store this week yet!). When I got there today, both the registering person and the blood draw people asked if I had ate before I came. They said it wasn't necessary to fast but that they agreed that I should, I only ate a bagel thin with some butter and they said that should be fine but if I had anything sugary, I should come back a different day.
It sucks that they made you do that today
I had to gear myself up for it. And the registering person told me she failed the 1 hour all the time and always passed the 3 hour, I hear it's pretty common actually. And don't feel like a failure!
Awwww no fair! They never should have let you go forward with the test, that result is totally and completely unreliable. I'm sorry you have to go through the 3 hour one, but hopefully it will be worth it because it will show in the end just how wrong the 1 hour one was!!
On a side note: In case you actually DO end up "failing" the 3 hour test as well, don't take it as a failure on your part! It actually has nothing to do with size, weight, what you've been eating, etc. and everything to do with your body's response to pregnancy hormones. The little skinny minnies with the tiny baby bumps get it just the same as the bigger girls. No worries yet, just take it one thing at a time. <hugs>
Thanks for the support! I put in a call to my regular doc, asking her to call back and I'm going to ask if given the circumstances, I can take the 1 hr again (should I even bother?).
I'm also going to ask her to just prescribe the test, so I can take it at a lab close to home instead of driving all the way up there to take it. The nurse who called with the result said that I had to do it there, but I don't believe that. It's not some specialized test that only they can do! There's a (not very good) hospital in our town; they must have a lab.
Thanks also for the reminder that even the tiny girls can get GD...I do get discouraged seeing how everyone also on the board seems to be skinny with a perfectly round bump. I compare myself to the HDBD pics and feel awful, and then when I read the risk factors for GD and hit all of them, I felt worse. I had lost 40 lbs with getting pregnant in mind, but then I went back to school for a year and put it all back on, fast. And of course, THAT'S when I managed to get KU.
I'm sorry you're feeling so upset - please know that this is NOT your fault. GD is simply a result of hormones interfering with you placenta. It is not because you ate this or that or didn't do this or that. It is NOT your fault.
A couple things to note:
- your insulin need increases as you get further alone in pregnancy. Taking it at 28wks only increases your chances of failing so there's nothing wrong with taking it at 24wks (in fact IMO if you passed at 24wks I would think you should take it again at 28wks to be sure).
- drinking soda beforehand shouldn't effect the numbers in a "normal" pregnancy
- my blood sugar crashes after those tests too which is why I refused the 3hr test this time around. Don't "retake" the 1hr -- if you fail that again (and probably will since your numbers weren't really even borderline), you STILL would have to go on to the 3hr. Don't do that to your body.
I had GD with DS2 so I had to take the 1hr at 10wks. I failed that and went straight to the GD diet. I am not diabetic outside of pregnancy, I was not even pre-diabetic. GD goes away as soon as the placenta is delivered because that's where the problem lies. If you are diagnosed after the 3hr, please join us on the high risk board. It's a great place to vent, get meal/snack ideas, etc.

I don't know a lot about GD, but I do know my doctor told me I had to eat a healthy, nonsugary breakfast that morning, at least 4 hours prior. And then to have nothing to drink except water after that. So it seems logical that if I did eat shortly before the test that the results would be skewed.
I'm glad you put the call in to your doctor, and I hope you can retest at a lab near you and not endure that drive again. And that you are GD free!
