Glasses?

I just got news today that my little guy will need glasses. I am having a tough time with this, I am just looking for some other mamas who have experience with this.

DS is 21 months.

Re: Glasses?

  • Think about the number of your friends now, or even your friends in high school/college who wear or wore glasses.  If you are like me, there are more than just a few.  Heck, the majority of my friends and coworkers wear glasses or contacts now!

I started wearing glasses in elementary school when the only options were thick plastic frames.  Technology has come along way and there are some super cute styles out there for tots.  The best thing is that your son's eyesight can be helped by something as simple as glasses! They sell them everywhere, it's not taboo or even considered odd to see them on people now.

Transitioning from the concept of a child as perfect in every way to needing help with something is hard because we set up all sorts of plans and dreams for our munchkins before they are even born.  I know.  Our daughter was perfect but then meningitis took her hearing at 17 months.  Know what?  She's even more perfect now!  She wears cochlear implants and let me tell ya, they draw attention every day, but not in a bad way.  People are curious, but DD is a charmer and instead of recoiling they are eager to learn, we get to talk to alot of nice folks instead of being anonymous.

So, cheer up, go choose the cutest frames you can, and consider yourself blessed to be that little guy's mom in a country where you can get him the help he needs to see this beautiful world.  You will grow a tough skin soon, too, and the curious looks will become background noise.   Hugs!

  • My DD began to wear them at a young age. We got flexible frames, scratch resistant lenses, with very slight tint due to light sensitivity. She is now nearly 11 and although we have gone through about 10 pairs of glasses, it is possible to "get use" to the idea as well as to make it work with and for you and LO. It is frustrating at times, but I think they have some of the most adorable frames for LO's My DD was so excited when she was able to pick out a new pair...lol this also led to her "accidently" breaking a few "on purpose" So she could get a prettier pair... While it got a bit expensive I was so glad she loved them :) Best of luck.

  • Just a brand recommendation: Miraflex. They are bendable, one piece, and have a connected strap to help them stay on. They have been great for us.

FWIW, I have always thought babies in glasses are stinkin' adorable. Did not foresee my own child needing them, though! Life is like a box of chocolates . . . ;)

  • Miraflex! And check your insurance coverage. Our insurance covers one set of lenses per year for free which is a godsend when they cost over $100 per lens and some years we need new lenses every 6 months.

    Good luck!

  • DS got his at 11 months old.  Like PPs, I recommend Miraflex - they are practically industructible.  It's a little bit of a pain and there was an adjustment period for him, but he seems to see much better and is now perfectly happy to wear his glasses.  They are also adorable and make him look extra cute IMO and apparently many others since he gets a lot of comments about how cute and smart he looks :).  Good luck!

  • DS2 started wearing glasses at 10mos old. He is now almost 2yr old. The brand we use is Miraflex or Flexon (I can't remember!). Wherever you get glasses, see what their replacement policy is (lenses and frames). Where I got mine, you could get new lenses (same Rx) for $20/lens and a $10 shipping fee if you couldn't pick them up. I've only had to use that service once.

Start slow in having him wear them. It will take time to get used to them like anything else new. We usually started with DS2 eating because his hands and mind were occupied with eating. We gradually added time from there and now he wears them as long as he isn't sleeping.
