PSA: No infant seats on top of grocery carts!

A horrible accident:

https://www.macon.com/2011/09/21/1712353/baby-dies-after-fall-from-grocery.html

It may seem easy, but don't place your infant seats on the top of grocery carts! They aren't meant to be there - either wear your baby in a carrier or place the entire infant seat in the cart where the groceries go.

I plan on either wearing the baby or sending DH to the store with a list!

Re: PSA: No infant seats on top of grocery carts!

  • this is really scary!

luckily, we both like to give input AT the store so we most always go together. but if we didn't i'd def put the carseat IN the cart, i don't think i'd be a fan of wearing a baby.

  • Wow.  Okay noted.  I will never ever do that.

  • Oh my goodness, that's horrible! I never put my daughter's carrier on that part of the cart...but why would you trust an employee to push the cart with your child on it to your car? I'm not trying to point the finger at anyone. This is a terrible accident. I just don't understand what the mother was doing instead of pushing the cart or carrying the baby?

  • On the same note, NEVER put your childs carrier on a upside down highchair or table sling.  I saw a bad accident at a restaurant from someone doing this and many restaurants are starting to ban it.  I think they all should!

  • That is a terrible accident, but I am going to do it with this LO just as I did with DS.

  • This is so scary! I see people doing this all the time and assumed (wrongly!) that it would be ok. Thank you so much for the PSA!

We do this one too. Probably not going to stop.

I sincerely hope no accident befalls your children. I prefer to be safe rather than sorry. We all draw our lines in different places.

  • I didn't read the article but I totally agree - it is NOT safe to put the infant seat up like that.  Place the seat in the basket of the cart and put a handbasket underneat to help hold more items.  It's only a short time that they are in the infant seat, you can find ways to work around it.

  • It just never seemed safe to me. The way the carts are made on the seat part doesn't really hold the car seat on properly anyways. I always put them in the carriage or we used the stroller and I walked to the store (and saved some money at the same time) Big Smile As for the upside down high chair, I only saw this being done a few months ago and it was a head scratcher for me. I just don,t understand the need to do this...
  • Wow.  I wouldn't feel safe putting the car seat on the cart without always keeping a hand on them, but now I won't do that at all.  If I'm shopping by myself and they're too small to sit in the cart seat, I'm putting them all the way in the cart from now on!

Having worked in a restaurant, I'm surprised it's taking them this long to call out the car seat slings.  Yes, they're made to fit car seats, but there's no restraints keeping it on, not to mention it's a hazard to have the baby on the end of the table where the wait staff needs to walk to deliver hot food.  I'll be either putting the car seat in a chair or on the inside seat of a booth.

  • This drives me nuts when I see this in a store.  My daughter was never been put in the top of the grocery cart.  A lot of the time MH and I would go together so we would put her in the snap and go, but if I was by myself - I would either put her in the snap and go and just put what I needed in the storage bin or she would go in the basket part of the cart.

UGH I always want to say something to parents when I see this, but I always bite my tongue or say something to MH who in turns tells me to basically shut up - it's not any of your business, but I at times have a hard time keeping my mouth shut.

  • I never used an infant seat ( and always wore my DD in a Mayawrap ) but I have seen this before and it's SO awful.

  • DH and I were at Walmart when we saw a lady put her carseat stradled across the bars in the cart part, not where children sit, but in the back and one of her children hopped on the front of the cart and it tipped forward and the carseat tumbled out. It was horrible and I actually screamed out when it happened. The carseat landed upside down and the baby had his head banged on the floor. The mom was really upset, but come on now... you take on look at this and know it's a horrible idea.
  • it always makes me super nervous when I see parents do this.  I always put DD in the big part of the cart if I was shopping alone or if I was shopping along with someone else we'd have 2 carts, one for DD and one for the products. Both ways worked fine for me and insured my DD was safe.  I bite my tongue when I see parents putting the infant seat on the top like that b/c I hate getting unsolicited advice from others.  But from a safety perspective it's hard not to say something.
