36 year old man dating 15 year old? WDYT?

Is it less weird once they are 20 and 41?

I was lurking on TTGP and someone posted they were 20, had been dating for 5 years and is ready to TTC. Then it came out how old her husband is.

Can you imagine letting your daughter date someone old enough to be her father when she is 15?

So weird.

  • I think it's weird, too, but a friend of mine married her husband when she was 15 and I think he was 40? She's in her early 30s now and they are still married with 4 kids. I think it's creepy.

Are they part of some strange religion?

There was someone on RE on the knot that was 16 when she married her husband...he was younger than 40, though. He was probably 22 or 23. He was her youth pastor, I think.

  • No in fact I think they're atheists.

  • There is no way in hell I would let my 15 yr old date someone that old.  I would tell the man he's not allowed to see my daughter & if he doesnt stay away I will be calling the cops.

Wait- what?? 15-year-olds can get married? You can't even get a driver's license at 15, but you can get married? Crazy.

  • My aunt was 15 when she met my uncle. He was 30 and he already had three kids from a previous marriage (my first aunt just took off). They married when she turned 18 and they had another child.

Honestly -- my cousins are MESSED up from basically being abandoned and a new mommy who was basically a teenager. Especially the eldest girl who basically is still in some sort of weird, strange competition for her father's love. The only normal, not-f-up kid is fourth child.

It's not so strange right now because she is 60 and he is 75 (or something like that).

  • Ick.

And I question the use of the word "man".

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

Right on!  What does a 36 year old have in common with a 15 year old?

  • How do 12 year olds "date"?

I had boyfriends, and sometimes went on occasional "dates" with boys...to the movies or something. A parent always had to drive us. I started dating DH at 16, though, and it was more like real dating. Before that it was mainly talking on the phone, going to dances, etc. And the "relationship" never lasted longer than a month or two.

  • Is it my DD?  If so, then I think it's time for H to get a shotgun.

    If not, meh.

  • It's still weird for 20 and 41, but at least at that point it's LEGAL.

  • Ick. 20 to 41 also sounds icky to me in almost any situation.

That said, a good friend of mine from grad school is married, she's 27 and he's 50 or 51 now and it's actually not a weird marriage. When I met her I thought she was an older student who had returned to school because she's very mature for her age (and dresses and cuts her hair old for her age). They met working at a national historic site together and knew they were far apart in age, but he seemed a good 10 years younger than he was and she seemed a good 10 years older than she was, so they thought it was more like a 7 year age difference. When they realized how far apart they were they broke up for a while but realized that they still missed each other, so they dated for a really long time then got married. So their relationship actually doesn't get the side eye from me, but I think it's an exceedingly rare thing for a couple that far apart in age to not be weird.

  • At those ages you can't call it dating.  He started abusing/molesting/raping her when she was 15.

  • My grandma married my grandpa when she was 15. she lied and said she as 16. I know he was in his 30's.

That said, I would lose my s h i t if DD brought home a guy DH's age.

ETA: he was 38 and she was 15. he was 57 when my mom was born.

  • It depends on what state you live in... in Maryland you can get married at 15 with the consent of one parent. My niece married her boyfriend when she was 15 and he was 21 i think? Anyway, everyone was skeptical but they are still together and doing great after 5 years of marriage and three kids. I can't imagine a 20 year age gap tho.. that seems pretty creepy to me too.

    BTDT and it was icky.

I knew it was a huge mistake the morning that we got up and went to the grocery store to buy stuff for bacon. I picked up some bacon and he immediately started lecturing me on how to do price comparison. He sounded like a father scolding his daughter!

I don't know what the hell I was thinking in the first place. Thinking back, the entire situation was really quite gross.

15 is age of consent in NJ I think, maybe it is 16 but some states it definitely is.

  • A 15 year old with someone in their 30s? I think pedophile. Sex offender. A normal adult would move on to a more appropriate relationship. A twenty-something dating an old man/woman is bit disturbing but they would also be consenting adults.

  • HELL TO THE NO.

I just have to wonder about what's going on at home if a 15 year old even wants to date someone that old. I mean, when I was 15, I thought 30 year-olds were ancient.

To sum it up: No, I would not ever allow my 15 year-old daughter to date someone more than maybe 2 or 3 years older (and 18 is really pushing it).

And if she said she wanted to, I would take a good hard look at our home, and we would change some things immediately.

  • If my DD's even mention dating a thirty-something/ or twenty- something man when they're 15- I'll invite him over. And then I'll show him my shotgun. And then I'll show him my shovel. And then I'll show him my cow field.
  • I do think there is a difference when you meet and the younger person is still in HS or even early college.  I think once you hit your mid 20's and are working and not living with Mom/Dad, it is less weird.  Granted, I still couldn't imagine being with someone 20 years older.  I worked with someone whose husband is 25 years older than her - she became a grandma at 35 and her step-kids are only a few years younger than her.  My aunt is 11 years younger than my uncle and they have been married for over 40 years!
