How old were you when you got you first job?

Ds was asking me about getting a job recently and I told him he had to wait a while, LOL. He wasn't very happy with that and then asked if he could set up a lemonade stand or a produce stand (where he'd get the lemonade and/or produce remains to be seen. Stick out tongue)

Anyhow, it got me thinking. Dh and I have both worked since we were quite young. I babysat as a kid and when I was in 7th grade started working at a local apple orchard on the weekends for $2.17/hour. I worked at the orchard until I was old enough to get a fast food job.

Dh started working front desk at the Holiday Inn (small town with a highway running through it- a few hotels and fast food restaurants near the exit are still pretty much the only things around) when he was only 15.

How old were you when you got your first job and what did you do?

Re: How old were you when you got you first job?

  • I started working when I was 15.  I was a cashier at a supermarket.  I babysat before that, though.

  • It was 1983 and I was 13.  I got paid minimum wage which in NYC was about $3.50 I think.
  • 12 picking strawberries, raspberries, weighing in fruit at the u-pick fields, snack bar & bakery.  Ended that job when I graduated high school.  Very small town, no fast food, pretty much the only place kids worked was that farm.  My parents still work there. Dad retired his real job & couldn't handle being home.

  • I started babysitting at 12.  I had my first real job at 14, working in the grocery store deli.  I prepared all the meat trays, cheese, veggie and fruit trays.

  • I started regularly babysitting at 12 (at least once a week, often more). Then at 16 I started working at a regular supermarket and was steadily employed until my OB pulled me out of work at the beginning of my third trimester in 2007.

  • Babysitting and a newspaper route when I was 11.

I think the legal age was 15 to start in a real job and I started the summer I was 14, turning 15. I was a baker in a local coffee shop. I figured that I hung out there anyway, I might as well get paid for it. I made all of the pastries, cakes and cookies. I was paid decently, but it still wasn't much over minimum wage.

I think my next job was waitressing? It was a looong time ago. LOL

  • I started working when I was 14.  I worked the concession stands at our local park.  After that, I worked at our local department store when I was 15.  The gap between my summer park job and getting hired at the store was the only period I have not worked since I was 14.
  • For an actual paycheque I was 16.  I had to be able to drive myself to and from work.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I think I was 17. I worked in a vet's office doing all the grunt work! My boss was an ass.

  • I was 16 and worked for my friend's mom at her bookstore (friend didn't want to work). I made $4.25/hr., and she was willing to work around my extracurricular activities. I think I worked 10 hrs/wk. It was an awesome job!

  • Aside from a lot of babysitting, I was 14 (?) and I was a cashier at the A&P. My boss would try to feel up all the female cashiers and then give us free cigarettes.

Then I worked for 4+ years at a vet's office, in the back. I learned a lot from that job -- mainly that I did not want to be a vet, lol.

  • I started babysitting at 11.
Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
  • My first paycheck job was at 15.  But I babysat for the neighbors kids from the time I was about 12 or 13 y.o.
  • I babysat, but don't really count that as a job. Didn't get my first job until after HS and it was a job at a department store for $5 an hour.

My parents didn't want us working as kids because they said we would work for the rest of our lives. My brother and I shared a car my parents bought for us.

  • I was 11 when I started babysitting, 14 when I started working a summer job in concessions at the public swimming pool.
  • I worked at a state historic site when I was 16 (where I met my hubby :-) )  I did babysit before that though.

  • I was probably 13/14 when I started occasionally babysitting.  I got my first actual job at 16.5 at a drive in B&K (like an A&W) that our neighbors owned.  We lived on a farm...about 10 miles away from 2 different towns - so it was silly to get a job and parents have to drive 40 miles for one shift.  I was technically a waitress, so it was like 2.75/hr I think...but it was seasonal (carhop-like) and about 1/2 mile from a major lake (easily 200 in tips for a weekend day).  It was awesome - I worked there until college - then I worked at Old Navy for about 5 years.

  • I "babysat" cousins when I was like 8. I was basically my aunts mother's helper. She had 3 boys, 2,3,4! she needed  help! babysitting regularly at about 12, first real job with a paycheck was 15 at a bar, prep cook and bussing at a bar in town.
  • Besides babysitting, I started working when I was 14 in the small animal dept. of a large vet. clinic. This was 19 years ago and I've only not worked 3 of those years. I wanna break Big Smile
  • My first job (Blockbuster Video) was soon after I graduated high school- when I was 18.  I never had time in high school between all my extra-curriculars.

    ETA: I didn't think of babysitting. I started babsitting/nannying when I was around 13.

  • I got a job when I was 15 and apparently shouldn't have been hired until I turned 16. lol It was at Burger King (so fancy, I know), and the rule must have just been a company policy of some sort.

  • I babysat off and on from 12-15. When I turned 16 I got my first "real" job at Taco Bell. Working the weekend Drunk-Thru (drive-thru). It was Never Boring!! I made $3.35/hr- and thought I was Filthy Rich! LOL
  • 15 and was the salad bar person for the Big Boy in the mall.  I had some odd baby-sitting jobs before that but I hated it and really didn't do much of it.
