Spent my birthday in the hospital

Saturday was my birthday, and I had a full day of plans. We managed to get apple picking in before severe back pain and urinary symptoms had me heading to the hospital to get checked out. I thought it was a bad UTI (I'm prone to these), but instead, stones (either kidney or ureter)! For the life of me I have no idea how these tiny crystals cause such epic amounts of pain.

I've spent the last 4 days flushing my system, glued to a heating pad, and practicing my breathing and relaxation techniques. Good news is, LO is fine and dandy (she discovered what fun it is to kick the fetal monitors), and I have greater confidence that if I can handle the pain I went through this weekend, I can hopefully handle a successful natural birth.

PS: the heating pad is the most divine invention on earth!!!

  • My SIL had a bunch of kidney stone episodes during her last pregnancy and it was awful for her. But she has the most perfect, easy baby in the world now! I'm hoping difficult pregnancy=easy baby. A girl can dream right? And my LO does the same thing, every day when she's on the monitor she goes NUTS! I swear she can tell it's there and either loves it or hates it lol. Hope you're feeling better and you don't have another episode!!

  • I've heard kidney stones are brutal, sorry you had to go through that especially on your birthday, yuck!

Glad to hear that you and baby are doing ok though.

  • they compare kidney stones to labor and some women say they are worse.  My Dh had to have surgery last year to remove his he said it was the worst pain he had ever felt. So hopefully they make labor a breeze. prob not but one can hope.

  • I hope they pass quickly for you and sorry that you have them in time for your birthday! Definitely not ideal timing. Glad to hear that your little one is okay and I hope that everything else goes smooth.

  • Happy late birthday, sorry it didn't go as planned, though. Kidney stones are NOT fun, passed them 4 different times, and I agree, I'd much rather give birth, and did naturally 14 yrs ago. We'll see how this one goes ;) Good luck and hang in there!!

  • I can relate. I had a stone two days shy of 20wks. Which meant I was in the ER instead of L&D. It was the worst pain of my life. It was bad enough where I was puking. First they did an u/s of my kidney, which wasn't as good as an xray but thats all they could do. They gave me TONS of fluid, morphine, something to stop the puking, and tylenol with hydracodeine. I had no idea any of that (other then fluids) was safe. But I was so thankful for the drugs. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone, I am glad your feeling better.

Do you have to get an x-ray after you deliver? I do just to make sure there are no more stones in my kidneys.

  • bless your heart!  i went through this when i was pregnant with DD.  i'm so worried about it happening again.  if it makes you feel any better, although i did get medicated with my stones, i was able to have my DD without an epidural (i was induced as she was 9 days late.). i didn't have to do a follow up xray or CT scan on my kidneys, but it definitely motivates you to keep hydrated.  and yes....heating pads are GREAT!
