3rd Trimester

Anyone have a dentist appt with x-reay in 3rd tri?

I think I have a cavity and I am assuming they will need to do an x-ray on my tooth--- is it even possible while pregnant and in 3rd tri?

  • I wouldn't let them x-ray it, personally. I had a similar situation and they just did a manual exam. They said they could do some surface sealant for the time being and then x-ray it after LO arrives. Unless it's REALLY bad, I'd wait til after baby.

  • My dentist would never do an xray on a pg woman...particularly when you're far enough along that waiting won't be that big of a deal. Wait until afrer LO gets here.

  • I had to get a root canal done when I was 14 weeks along. Multiple x-rays were taken, and they laid two of the lead vests over me every time they took one. My dentist uses digital technology, and the radiation from it is quite minimal. I asked my OB about it right before I went, and she said I would be fine. You should ask your OB and dentist for their advice.

Mine would definitely not do one.  Sorry to hear about your cavity :(  I was having some tooth pain all of a sudden last week & thought I had a cavity.... had them check it out & turns out my teeth had just moved & I had a "high spot" that they were easily able to adjust.  Thanks, hormones, for causing my teeth to move, too....

  • I went to the dentist back in June and they wouldn't even do the yearly teeth x-rays on me then. I don't think I would let them do it now either. I have one tooth has been bothering me but I am going to stick it out until after baby comes just to be safe.

  • my OB was 100% okay with getting all my normal dental Xrays during pregnancy and encouraged it!!! I was told to make sure my neck was covered and my teeth are in good health. The dentist called my OB's office to get a verbal okay from them too. Considering all the oral hygeine issues pregnant woman can face, and any oral hygiene issue affects your blood & your heart directly more than anything else, i wouldnt skip it.
  • I just had a cavity filled. They didn't do an xray at all. They just filled it in. They will do x-rays at my first appointment after I have the baby.

I spoke with my OB about this since I'm due next month for x-rays and a cleaning. I was told the the dental x-rays are fine. You can ask them to put 2 vests on you and turn down the radiation a bit(they can and will do this, it won't affect the outcome of the x-rays where they can't see problems). Some OB's say it's fine, orthers say absolutely not. Check with yours(I take it you trust him/her, or you souldn't be going their), then follow their advice)

  • Ask your OB - (s)he will probably be fine with it.

I had x-rays done during 1st tri (required by my dental office before they would do a cleaning). I had 2 lead coverings put on me for the x-ray, and my OB was totally fine with it. Because you've got so much extra blood pumping through your gums, a cavity can get a lot worse FAST, so I probably would not wait until LO gets here. They found at my cleaning appointment that I had a cavity, and it got substantially worse between when they found it (12 weeks) and when I had it filled (25 weeks). Had I waited for LO, I probably would have needed a root canal.

Word of warning - lying on your back for that long can be difficult this far along in pregnancy. If you need to take a break partway through the procedure, don't be scared to ask.

  • I wouldnt have let them anyway, but my dentist's office does not do xrays on pregnant women. They can see/feel cavities without xrays too.

  • I needed to have an emergency root canal last week (it was buckets of fun, let me tell you) and my OB was fine with the dental work. My dentist had me call and have my OB fax over their policies with x-ray, antibiotics, and anesthetics.

Because of the extent of my tooth damage and pain my OB recommended having the work done right away. The potential health problems for myself and baby were much worse if I would get an infection vs. being double draped for a digital x-ray.

Call your OB for their recommendations. If the cavity isn't painful I'm sure they can wait until after you deliver or be able to fill it without an x-ray, but it all depends on how severe it is.

  • same as PP, it's totally fine to have x-rays done in the 3rd tri.  i had to have 2 root canals while pregnant w/DS.  it totally sucked, i'd never had one before but the pain was ridiculous and needed to be taken care of.

  • The amount of radiation that you alone get is very very very minuscule outside of the lead gown. With the lead on, you honestly do not get much at all. I work in an environment where I am exposed to x-rays daily (and not like at the dentists office where they leave the room..I work in surgery so I am right there when it's used) and have to wear two badges that are monitored monthly. One underneath my gown at baby level and one outside at chest level. My "outside" one doesn't register much at all (meaning the exposure really is that low), and the baby one has never had any amount show up on it.
You are perfectly safe to have a dental x-ray done. They will take the necessary precautions by covering you with a lead gown.
I personally would much rather have the dentist take the x-ray and make sure there was nothing else going on other than just a cavity. I'm 34 weeks and still getting major dental work done. I have been this entire pregnancy. My doctor and dentist are both comfortable with the decision.

  • I went just last week to a new place and I told them my old dentist said I have a cavity and they didn't take any x-rays. They scheduled me an appt after the baby is born to go do x rays and an exam.
