Trying to Get Pregnant

Exercise while TTC, is jumping around ok?

I'm overweight and have been working with a trainer for about a year. Despite a good diet and exercise routine, my weight has yet to drop! My Dr did a complete blood work check on me and I'm otherwise healthy and have been given the okay to being the TTC journey.

I've read about exercise during pregnancy, but how about while TTC? I've asked my trainer (also a great friend of mine) if we could lighten things up a bit - lighter weights/lower intensity workouts.... But I'm not sure if I'm limited in any other way. For example, we've been doing vertical jumps... Kind of like squatting down and jumping up high onto a surface (a tractor tire is what I've been jumping up onto..sounds strange, I know..but seems to be a great workout)...

We've been doing the baby dance every other night since the 10th day of my cycle. My cycle is NOT the same every month but I have a feeling that I ovulated yesterday (thick egg-whitish CM).... Could doing these jumps hurt the egg&little swimmers chance of meeting and making a baby? - Is it possible that it could jostle things around too much and hurt the implantation proccess? Please educate me =)

  • I work out with a trainer too and she says it's fine--she has background/training for pregnant clients too.

I haven't lightened up at all during my sessions while TTC, but I can't say that it doesn't cross my mind, particularly when I work out just before my expected period.

  • I was thinking about just keeping the routine the same until I'm sure if I'm pregnant (after all, sometimes it takes years to get pregnant!)...but then I was thinking about how hard my trainer pushes me. He's new at training and sometimes pushes me a little harder than I think I should be pushed. I get dizzy and lightheaded and nauseous... And he's not easy on me when I say I need a break. Don't get me wrong - in some sick way I like this treatment. It keeps me going and pushes me to do thing I never thought I could. But I know my body best, and I know that that type of exercise can't possibly be healthy for having a baby lol. The workouts are still pretty rough, just not as exhausting as they were.

Thanks for your answer! It's good to hear from someone who is working out with a more experienced trainer! =)

Working out while TTC is perfectly fine. It's typically fine during pregnancy as well, as long as you aren't doing anything new, and you aren't lifting weights, or doing anything extremely strenuous. While TTC, if you are doing any extreme exercising (for instance training for and participating in something like a marathon or triathlon -- especially if you've never done one before) it's possible the high stress on your body could delay ovulation. But, most athletes (or amateur athletes), whose bodies are used to the activity, don't have an issue. For instance, I'm currently training to run 13.1 miles (which includes a lot of hard workouts throughout the week), and it has not been affecting my cycles/ovulation.

It's actually good that you're exercising, because your body will be in better shape for TTC and being pregnant. And since extra weight can cause problems with TTC, doing what you can to lose weight can help alleviate those risks.

The presence of EWCM is NOT an indicator that you have ovulated. It only suggests that you may ovulate. I've had some cycles where I got a lot of EWCM, but never actually ovulated. The EWCM is just your body trying to prepare for ovulation. And, unless you are tracking your basal body temperature (through charting) you will not know for sure if you ovulated. Check out fertilityfriend.com to learn about this, and to start charting (this will help you figure out whether the exercise is causing problems with TTC as well!)

No. Exercise will NOT affect fertilization or implantation.

  • I ran throughout TTC #1 and throughout my pregnancy.  I would say jumping and the like would be okay.
