Sure Fit orthodics?

Does anyone's LO use Sure Fit orthodics? Do you think they're helpful? Did u need special shoes? My DD outgrew her AFOs. The dr suggested these. I may have to pay out of pocket and want to make sure they're worth while (she hated the AFOs). Thanks!

Re: Sure Fit orthodics?

  • Peyton has SMO's I believe the EOB showed they cost around $1500.  We passed on the AFO's when she was younger, so I don't know about comparing them, but she really doesn't mind them.

She needs hers cut down a little bit and we have a hard time with shoes, since she already has a wide foot.

A really really hard time. You don't need special shoes, but you need bigger sizes, you can take the insole out & that helps but velcro usually won't work, they have to tie

  • Thank u....thats about what the AFOs cost :-(. Hopefully she'll wear these
  • DS2 (2yr old) has DAFO's. They are a pre-made DAFO vs custom made. He wears them when awake. We use New Balance shoes for him, actually 2 sizes bigger then his normal shoe size without DAFOs and we take the insole out. New Balance shoes have a very easily removed insole which makes it great (other shoes the insole is glued in, so if you don't get it out cleanly you are kind of SOL).

DS2 got his DAFOs through EI and there was no cost to me. PP stated something about tieing vs velcro shoes. We have velcro shoes and they are not an issue at all for us. But we also did not need to get a wide shoe. Just taking the insole out created enough width for the DAFO inside the shoe.

  • DD#1 has them and DD#2 will be fitted for them as soon as she's walking more.  I love the sure steps (we never tried any others but I've heard horror stories from other moms) and DD#1 actually makes sure people put them on her when they put her shoes on (she's goes to preschool).  The only thing I would say is make sure you find a good orthotics person.  We had to change our insurance (luckily DH's job offered it last year) to go to the one guy my DD will allow to measure her feet.  It doesn't hurt to get measured but as they get older they hate getting messed with (also DD has realized that if her shoes come off at the MD she might be getting a shot).  I was buying stride rite shoes but they stopped selling the ones that did so well and now we get nikes.  Nikes are in whole sizes so you don't have to buy shoes as often, they have wide sizes, and you can find them on most online shoe places.  You will need to get LO's feet measured with the suresteps so you know how wide and what size you need (it usually can add a 1/2 size and width to the shoe you need).  Sure steps are awesome and LO will even be able to pick out their own pattern (DD#1 is just now getting where she wants to pick them).
