Anyone had a cold yet? :(

Having a cold while pregnant is a cruel joke!  DH spent some time with the pharmacist to find the "safest" medication for me, which is a generic sudafed, but the pharmacist warned about it restricting blood flow to the babies, so naturally I'm terrified to take it.  What did you take?

Re: Anyone had a cold yet? :(

  • Yes, and it sucks so bad! I took Tylenol Cold and Flu. My doc said that I am allowed to take any Tylenol Cold products. Good luck!

  • That's not fun!

I maybe too cautious, but I don't take anything while pregnant. I'm sure there are things, but I guess I don't want to risk it! I do the nety pot, hot showers to decongest, spicy food- also to decongest...Hope you feel better soon!

  • Yes, unfortunately I had a terrible head cold. I found that none of the medicines that my OB said were okay to take made much of a dent in it, so I relied on the neti pot and steaming my face to get me through (and a lot of whining to DH). Feel better!

  • Ugh. I woke up this morning feeling terribly sick!! I have a headache/body ache/sore throat/ ears are all stuffed up etc.. so my plan is to get some vitamin C drops and drink lots of decaf hot tea!

I hope you feel better!! Being sick is no fun, especially when you're pregnant

  • I have one right now.  I haven't taken anything but a Benedryl at night to dry me up so I can breathe, but I'm thinking it's time to move on to something more since it's gotten worse.  I can't find my list of safe meds from my doctor, but my friend's husband is a pharmacist, so I can ask him.  I think plain sudafed is fine, but nothing with letters after it.  I can't remember though.

  • You poor thing :(  I had a cold two weeks ago that lasted almost a week, sore throat, congestion, etc.  I just drank a lot of fluids, ate a lot of Halls, and took Tylenol PM at night to sleep.  I hope you feel better.

  • Colds are no fun. My DD gave me hers but I haven't taken anything with this cold yet. I was going to take benadryl but I didn't have any. :(

Rest and fluids help too. GL!!

  • I'm sorry you're sick!  I had a horrible cold back in 1st tri and I was so miserable.  I didn't want to take anything (I hadn't even been to my first OB appt yet) but I was told I could take regular Tylenol.

  • I hear you! I am coming down with one right now (my nose and head are so congested that I feel like they're going to pop and my eyes are watering from a) hormones and b) head pressure. I am planning on not taking anything (besides some vitamin C halls) and taking a day off work to stay in bed and drink chicken noodle soup. I am also very nervous about taking anything while pregnant, so I'd rather just take some time to let me body fight it off and I have some vacation time so I have the luxury of doing that.

  • i took half a dose of regular sudafed with mine to get me through the worst parts of my cold.  benadryl helped me dry up and get some sleep.  tylenol products don't work for me.  i tried steam, neti-pots,saline solutions for my nasal cavity none of which worked
  • I had one a few weeks ago and now I have caught another one. Sad Last time I stuck mostly to chicken noodle soup, orange juice (which I had to give up b/c of heartburn), lots of tea with lemon & honey, and the doctor told me it's okay to have cough drops and my inhaler. I'm not sure about taking anything because I didn't. Hopefully this time it goes away quicker then last time. I would rather not have a miserable week.

  • I've had one for the last week or so. Today is actually the first day I can breathe through my nose again!! I didn't take anything for it. Just drank lots of water & OJ

  • When I had my intake apt. at the hospital they gave me a list of OTC drugs for different symptoms that are safe:

sore throat: chloraseptic spray or lazenges

cold & flu: tylenol (reg or x strength), actifed, tylenol-cold, sudafed,

congestion: ocean spray, vaporizer, robitussin (plain or cf)

    cough: robitussin, cough drops

DO NOT USE advil, aleve, or aspirin to relieve your pain. It's in caps and bold, several times, so I'd avoid those :)

Is their a nurse help line you can call to ask as well, just to double check any of these?

  • I've had two colds so far during the pregnancy.  I didn't take anything through the first one,  and the second one just tylenol.    Wasn't sure if I could take any cold medicines or not.

  • I'm sorry you're sick.  It really sucks.  I ended up with bronchitis last month and was put on antibiotics, I still have lingering effects from being sick and the start of a sinus infection so my doctor put me back on antibiotics.  I'm hoping they work this time and I don't have to take anything else again.  I really hate taking stuff while pregnant but I have a horrible immune system and a simple cold turns into bronchitis/laryngitis/strep for me.

Keep drinking lots of fluids, especially water and juice.  Warm showers/baths help break up the congestion and turn a humidifier on while you're sleeping.  Good luck!

  • I had one at 10 weeks and my Dr. and pharmacist told me I couldn't take Sudafed until 13 weeks so I had to suffer med-free. Worst week of my life. I usually get a cold/flu in the fall too but at least I can have Sudafed if I do. Then again, maybe the flu shot I got will prevent it. I was also told I can have regular Robitussin (not DM) which helps with loosening and expelling mucus.

  • I had one early on, and my Dr told me I could take the good sudafed - where you have to give your ID to get it (I had to get generic because the name brand had been recalled for something), and I could take Claritin (but not D) if it's allergies.

I haven't had one since then, but the kids at school are already starting with the sniffles and colds and whatnot, so it's only a matter of time.  Usually this doesn't start until late October/early November - going to be a long 3 months...
