3rd Trimester

I know it's a waste of money, I don't care.

FTM and everything tiny is super cute and attracts us like moths to light. We are those parents that want to buy rain boots even though she won't be splashing in any puddles, the super adorable pair of jeggings she'll outgrow the same day she's wearing them. Don't care. lol MIL keeps saying how it's a waste of money; obviously. We're just excited. Leave me be. Anyone else the same way? :)

Re: I know it's a waste of money, I don't care.

  • my opinion is if you have the money to do it, do it. Your kids are only young once. enjoy every minute of it. If i could buy useless adorable things, i would in a heartbeat!

  • If you have the money and you want to buy it then go for it.  It's not any of your MIL's business what you spend your money on.  Even though she won't be splashing in any puddles that doesn't mean rainboots won't come in handy (not sure where you live) and as for leggings - if your little girl grows faster or slower and you have clothes that don't match the season - you can put her in a skirt with a pair of leggings and tada - it became a winter/fall outfit.  See how I can justify anything?  LMAO!

  • at the rate this child is going he is going to have to change every hour or so to wear all the clothes that I have!  In my defence I have very few items new!  We are a bit older so all our friends are giving us their stuff b/c they are done with having kids. My cousin is sending 6 rubbermaid totes of clothes!  for sizes 0-2 yrs.  good thing we are moving to a bigger place, this boy will have a bigger wardrobe than me!

  • TOTALLY know how you feel! Sure he doesn't need a sock monkey hat for pictures, or mini work boots, OR the extra jack skellington cloth diapers I bought, but dangit he sure is going to look cute in them and that's what I want! Lol
  • I've given into this urge a few times lately but I'm trying to reserve myself.  We're not rich, but not poor.  However, I will be out of work for a year for LO and have no idea what one salary will really feel like, so I'm trying to limit the splurges.
  • I think your MIL is just jealous that you got them and she didn't.  :)

  • Oh, I would be sad if the only clothes I had for LO were of the cheap and functional variety! It's been fun to get a few cute splurge items, like the itty bitty pair of cargo pants, and a newborn-size cap with a bear face and ears on it. DH and I only plan on having one child, so heck yes he will have some cute stuff he wears once or twice for photos.

If there's a consignment store in your area, that's a great source for those cute and impractical items. ;)

  • Of course you should spend YOUR money on whatever you want and ignore MIL...personally though, I'd rather put that money towards their college funds.

  • Meh, this is my 3rd and I still by cute, useless things - and when they grow out of them I sell them for close to what I paid for them - works out well for me.
  • I have a TON of clothes for DD, and I know it's way more than she will ever wear.  I bought everything at garage sales because I was trying to be practical in the beginning, but as time went on, I kept going to garage sales and accumulating adorable, barely-used (or in some cases, new with tags) clothing.  And it's really hard to turn down that adorable sweater set from the Gap for $2, even though you have 3 others just like it.  MIL HATES that I buy stuff from garage sales, and I have a feeling if I hadn't bought so much stuff, she would have bought just as many clothes from Gymboree and the like.
  • Nope, we are on a tight budget, but hey, if she only wears certain outfits once, you can sell them at a consignment store :) Then families with less can have a chance at the cuteness. It benefits everyone ;)

This is what I was going to say. The cute baby stuff is for you, a college fund is actually for the benefit of the baby.

  • I used to be that way when we were TTC.  But after years and years of that I've toned down alot, kinda like you don't have the same rain boots urge with the 3rd or 4th kid.  For this baby we have bought some diapers and people have given us things.  Our kids doesn't even have a crib yet and her room is a wreck!  The only thing I've "splurged" on is a bottle of Dreft.  Yes, it's a total waste of money but I loved the way it smells!  At this point the extras are for you not baby anyway so just enjoy yourself while you can.

  • I totally agree with you. I don't care if she only wears something a few times. I figure I can sell a lot of it at a consignment shop when she is done. Baby clothes are so cute and I love to shop. I can't help myself. And don't even get me started on the adorableness that is etsy. I need to stay far, far away from that site!

  • DH and I have been the same way.  These small baby boutiques see us coming a mile away!  We have bought so many baby items for the sheer fact that they are totally adorable.  Even if our LO can only wear them once or twice, I don't care!
  • If you have the money, go for it. It's part of the fun.

  • I think it's fantastic. SO and I have found the cutest little things that we just had to get. It makes me even happier to say that he actually grabs more stuff than I do!

I just thought I would let you know that my DD is sitting next to me while I bump, and she pointed at your siggy pic and said "Baby cute!" haha

  • Yes, I have been buying pretty much every cute thing I see!  My mom has started doing it, and my grandmother said she's going to start the minute the baby is born... this child will never have an empty closet!  My mom always picks up those little golashes in stores, she hasn't gotten them yet, but I have a feeling it will be soon. The internet has made it even worse, everyday I get e-mails from Zulily, Totsy, Gilt, etc with new baby stuff.  We get a new package at the door everyday... Embarrassed

  • Totally! I don't care that I already have more clothes than she could possibly need from my baby shower, I still buy her some things that are super cute because I want some of her things to be things that I picked out and purchased for her (I know she wont know or care but why should everyone else get to have all the fun!) The way I see it, baby clothes are wayyy cheaper than big kid/adult clothes so I would rather "splurge" on her now. Besides you only get to choose their clothes and dress them up however you want for a short amount of time.

  • Absolutely! You can buy whatever you want. I love the idea of little rain boots, that just made my day.
