Toddlers: 24 Months+

How to potty train a toddler with a mobile baby around?

So DD is obsessed with our little potty. She loves to take out the insert and bang it on the ground. So usually it's in our bathroom, with the door shut.

How do I potty train DS and keep DD away from the potty? She is all over him, and I have a feeling she will try to climb on him if he sits on the potty. I think DS is ready, at least to try a day or two without diapers. The problem is that I don't know how to arrange the logistics of getting him on the toilet regularly without DD interfering. Thoughts?

  • Keep the door to the bathroom closed.  Place yourself between DS and the door when in there.  Consider starting with potty seats and have several throughout the house- that way she can play with them/knock them around and as long as you keep them clean, shouldn't matter.  Invite her in to watch.  Hold her and teach her to cheer DS on.  Think of her as a team member and part of the process.

  • We started potty training DD a couple of months ago and have a split level with no bathroom on our main level so the potty has always been in our living area. DS was interested in it at first, but eventually lost interest and only now occasionally takes the insert out and bangs it around, sticks one of DHs shoes in it, tries to stand in it, etc. We always dump/clean it immediately after DD goes so it doesn't bother me and I usually don't pay any attention when he's playing with it. I find that with a lot of things it just takes waiting it out a bit for the novelty to wear off, then my kids are usually over whatever was SO interesting they just couldn't leave it alone Smile
