I ask because dh's fam is Italian and neither of us speak while much of his family does. I've seriously considered trying Rosetta Stone (what can I say, I'm a sucker for informercials!).

What other language(s) do you speak?

I know some German. Took it all through high school and college. I understand and can speak a lot but I haven't used it since graduating, so I am losing conversational skills. DH speaks a bit. (We met in German class in high school)

I took 12 years of French. You would think I would be fluent. Nope. I can marginally read it and understand it some of it when it is spoken slooooooooooooooooowly.

No, my DH speaks 4 languages. His best friend speaks 12 Surprise . I met him the fist time at my SIL's wedding. He was speaking to DH in french, the to my FIL in Lingala (my FIL is Congolese), then to my MIL in spanish (she is from Puerto Rico), then to my SIL's friend she is from Eritrea in her language, and then to his own wife in Armenian. I was in awe how do they not get all mixed up in your head.

I took 8 years of French and 2 of Italian. If you've taken any Spanish, Italian is remarkably similar. I spent a semester in Rome which helped, but I thought it was pretty easy to learn.

I'm academically fluent in Spanish. I got an undergrad degree in it. However, practically speaking, I'm conversationally fluent. But if I have to try to give technical explanations, like when I had to go to the ER in Puerto Rico with spotting, it was not good.

I "speak" American Sign Language. I am currently in ASL 2. I also know a little Spanish and my sister is trying to teach me some Japanese. I am a lot better at ASL than spoken languages so far!

Yes. I speak another language. I can read it also. Writing is another story. English was actually my second language. I didn't learn it until I went to school. My mom watches ds and he can speak some words n understands both. I really hope he can learn it.

I am fluent in Spanish. I went to school in Mexico for awhile as part of a study abroad program, and DH was born and raised in Ecuador. DS is learning Spanish and English.

I speak Spanish well enough to get by. 10years of it & it was my minor. Much better at it when drinking. I went to costa Rica almost 2 yrs ago and found out it"s still pretty good & have used it to speak with 2 of my cousins' in-laws (one married a Spaniard, the other a Puerto Rican). I hope to keep it up- still dream in Spanish on occasion which is a good sign.
