Umbilical stump care in colder months

We just learned in our infant care class that we should dress baby in just a t-shirt and diaper until the stump falls off (to promote air flow to help dry the stump) and to avoid onsies or anything that may rub/pull on the stump. This all makes sense but how do we keep baby warm now that we are headed into the cooler season?

Re: Umbilical stump care in colder months

  • DS was born in February and we did a short-sleeved side snap T, diaper, and swaddled him in light blankets most of the time at the beginning.  When we dressed him, we usually put him in a one-piece button down thing on top of the side-snap T.  He was 7 lbs but the newborn stuff was still big so it didn't seem to pull or rub on anything.  Honestly, it seemed like the cord rubbed more on me when he was nursing, sometimes I got a little spot or two blood on my nursing tank, but it never did that on his clothes.  His fell off around 1 week I think, maybe 10 days, but definitely less than 2 weeks.

  • Both of my kids wore onesies - and we never had any problems.  My oldest was a winter baby, and he wore nightgowns or sleepsacks to bed (he wasn't a fan of the swaddle). The youngest was a summer baby so he just wore a onesie and was swaddled or covered with a muslin blanket.

  • Good to know - thanks for sharing ladies!
  • DD was a fall baby and we always had her in footed sleepers.  She didn't seem to have any problems with the stump.
