I feel dumb for even asking these, but I suppose I have never had to deal with diaper rash first-hand, so here goes.
1. Does diaper rash look like redness with little white-ish bumps in it? If so, I think DS has a mild case of it.
2. I'm using Boudreaux's. Do you rub the cream on at EVERY diaper change, and do you have to rub it in all the way or just kinda apply it and leave it?
I noticed this redness yesterday but it doesn't seem to bother him. The bumps are getting a little bigger though, which makes me uneasy. Also, it is concentrated more in his (TMI alert) testicular area...like, under them
Is this normal for boys??
Thanks!

Re: 2 really stupid questions re: diaper rash
I apply and leave it, sort of like a paste, rather than lotion.
You might be dealing with yeast (who knew boys can get yeast infections?!?!). If your diaper rash doesn't clear up in a day or so using the butt paste, try adding some lotrimin (a thin film, rub it in).
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
ditto this.
Apply it in a THICK layer - like spackle. the goal is soothing the area, but also a nice strong moisture barrier between his skin and his diaper.
and the white bumps make me think it might be yeast, too. So if it doesn't get better or gets worse despite the butt paste at every diaper change, then try an anti-fungal cream (we use generic Clotrimazole) under the butt paste in a thin layer a few times per day.
ETA: air drying is also definitely important. give him lots of naked time if you can, and get his diaper area as dry as possible before applying the cream and putting another diaper on.
Because we're fancy like that.
If it is a yeast rash, do NOT use cornstarch! It will feed it and make it much, much worse.
For a yeast rash, you need an anti-fungal. Our pedi has called in a prescription for nystatin ointment and has also told us we can use lotrimin. A very thin layer of that + a thick layer of Triple Paste over it always works wonders for us.
Ditto Jill.
The bumps indicate yeast usually.
Never even thought of yeast! I'll pick up some Lotrimin at the store today. Thanks ladies!
Does anyone know what causes the yeast? DS never sits in his diapers. I change him constantly!

Is he on any meds (antibiotics) or have been sick?

I know that antibiotics can bring it on BIG time. But Ava gets it every so often, and she is in dry undies all day. Not really sure why.
Nope, we haven't been sick or on any meds. Strange!
Bel4780, DON'T WORRY!!! I'll definitely remember the corn starch for future diaper rashes!

My pedi thinks we are all pretty much colonized with yeast, and it can flare up at any time.
Caroline definitely is, and has an ongoing yeast diaper rash that I battle every single day. We have a constant supply of Nystatin and I dry her hiney with a hair dryer at every single diaper change...plus a THICK layer of Triple Paste anytime she looks even a little bit red. It never goes completely away, unfortunately.
She has significantly improved since I started her on probiotics everyday.
Thanks! Good to know. Did your pedi say how many times a day to apply the anti-fungal? I picked up some Lotrimin today...
