Food Allergy

Fruit allergies

So I started with jarred fruits, DS had prunes and on the 3rd day he got a redness spread across both temples and a little red around his eyes.  I figured it was a reaction to the prunes and didn't give him those again.  He has now had the same reaction to jarred apricots and apples.  It was suggested that it may be a reaction to the citric acid they put in the jarred fruits.

So tonight I made fresh applesauce, and he had the reaction again!! I don't really want to keep trying fruits if he's going to react to all of them.

Is it possible to be allergic to fruit in general???

Oh, he's also had bananas once....no redness but he threw them up right after he ate them.

The reaction is always the same triangle shaped red spot on his temples, no trouble breathing, no swelling, no digestive issues after. The redness goes away within 5-10 mins of eating.

I'm going to consult his pedi on Monday, I just find it strange that it is many different fruits he seems to be reacting to.

Re: Fruit allergies

  • All of those fruits (minus bananas) are all actually related. Something about the proteins in them.

DS is allergic to apricots and peaches. He vomits and has massive diarrhea which instantly causes his skin to blister and peel. So not at all what you are seeing but according to the allergist I needed to watch DS with apples, cherries, pears, and something else that I can't think of at the moment.

He said there are 2 kinds of allergies to these fruits. 1st one is where you have breathing issues and hives to just the raw fruits and the 2nd is breathing issues, hives, vomiting, diarreah to raw or cooked forms.

If you have the 1st kind when you cook it the protein that you are allergic to changes but if you have the 2nd kind that protein is not changed by cooking and you still have issues. Unfortunately my DS has the 2nd kind.

I would talk to your Pedi but you could try waiting. My DS had issues with all solid foods until he was almost 10 months. They either made him throw up and have diarrhea or made him extremely constipated. He was almost a year before he did ok eating 2 meals a day.

Not sure if any of this was helpful or not. Good luck and your LO is super cute :)

  • I'm glad you posted this, we have the very same problem! I also thought it was an additive in the jarred fruits, but she has the same reaction to fresh as well. If she only has a little bit, she is just fine but the more she eats the redder she gets. It makes me very apprehensive to try new foods. My Pedi didn't know what it could be and is referring us to an allergist. I've tried searching "Dr Google" for information but cannot find anything. Hopefully the allergist will answer our questions. Good luck to you!
  • never heard of all fruits but anything is possible.

have you tried baking the apple?  i have heard that there are many people allergic to raw fruits but not baked ones.

Definitely go see an allergist also..

  • Google has been completely unhelpful.  I am waiting on a call back from the pedi and hopefully we will be able to figure out what's going on!

As of now I have just stopped fruits all together.  DS's reaction also increases with the amount of fruit he has, and then disappears shortly after he stops eating it.

I cooked the fresh fruit I gave him, still reacts to it. :(
