Was going to CD.. but now...

We were pretty sure we were going to CD our LO but now Im sorta leaning away from that. I dont have any 1 good reason other than they seem pretty expensive upfront to start with, Ive heard you have to try multiple types and switch it as LO gets older, and then you still have to deal with the mess of washing....

Maybe you can help convince me its not so bad?

Re: Was going to CD.. but now...

  • The mess of washing isn't really that bad! I suggest buying prefolds that will fit as a nb, but go with one sizes after that! That way you're not constantly switching! If you buy used it's not as expensive either!

  • I have friends that do CD and they swear by it. It is expensive up front, but in the long run you do save a lot of money.

For DH and I, it's not an option, neither of us want to deal with poop for any longer a period of time than we have to. I don't want to scrape poop out of a diaper, nor do I want to put poopy/pee-y diapers in my washing machine. But to each their own! :)

You do realize you already have poop in your washing machine, right? Fecal matter is all over underwear! Don't forget the blowouts in sposies! You get it all over clothes anyway!

    But hey it's your choice!

I'm aware of that yes, but generally not to the extent of what ends up in a diaper, and I would soak any blowouts before they ever hit the washing machine.

I think what is the least appealing for DH and I both is dealing with scraping the diapers etc.. We like to get in, get out.

Like I said, to each their own, but it's not for us.

  • If you do prefolds as a newborn then a trial after that then the expense really wont be bad. Also, remember they can be used for multiple children and you can sell what you don't like. Both of those reasons are great things you can't do with disposables. Whichever you choose is cool!

Pretty much this.  I'm looking and taking my time with buying some "stash" now just focusing on prefolds and a few different brands of one-sizes.  We don't have much but it's a good craigslist/ amazon search to check if you're thinking about it.  For the start-up cost of NB diapers, we'll have all the pre-folds and a bunch of CDs for well under $100.  We're choosing to try CD for financial and environmental reasons so we'll be adding in 'soakers' (I think that's right) and liners that will be washed more than covers.

  • I don't think the start up cost is all that expensive. We are about $250 in and have everything we really "need" for the first 6 months or so. I registered for some more things that I would like to have, like AIO's, a few extra covers, etc., but we are definitely well covered to be able to wash every 2-3 days.

And as far as scraping poop, the way I understand it is that you don't have to scrape anything until you start solids. We got the bio-liners for when we do start solids, so I don't plan to scrape or swish anything, just lift out the disposable liner, throw it away and wash the rest.

  • We cd'd DD and will this LO. Yes, it can be expensive upfront, but you will save SO much money in the long run. And I wouldn't agree with the statement that you will have to spend all kinds of money trying various diapers and switching. FWIW, we've used Bum Genius One sizes pretty much exclusively (though I do have a couple Fuzzibunz too). If you are nervous about finding a type that works, why not try a diaper trial like this? You send back whatever you don't like at the end of the trial and are credited pretty much all of the money back.

And the poo in the wash and scraping diapers comments kind of make me laugh. The amount of poo that actually is on the diaper when I wash it is comparable to a blown out onesie, and I have never scraped poo. We have a sprayer and I frequently use flushable liners.

  • Everything is just soooooo confusing and there is tons and tons of reading to on it, and I just dont have the time for that. Since everything is "dependent" on baby there isnt a starter set kit you can buy- maybe then Id be all over it!

I guess I don't understand the tons of reading. I certainly didn't do a ton of reading. I just bought the dipes and followed the washing instructions included. Did you see the linky in my previous post? That essentially IS a starter kit.

I'm not knocking cd, but my last child didn't either and we used disposables. The cheap luvs.

  • I started collecting diapers when we started trying and would enter blog contests. I was lucky enough to win 20 OS BumGenius diapers. We have decided to go with Lil Joeys newborn diapers and I've bought 12 of those used from ladies on the CD board. Overall we haven't spent that much money yet plus the diapers can always be sold if it doesn't work and they grow out them. Disposables won't make you any money back, just kinda how I look at it.

  • We are CDing and are hoping to get diapers for our showers. We are registering on Amazon for that specific reason.

Also, we found a brand we like that is cheaper than most. It is called Just Simply Baby and you can buy a package for $236 that includes 20 diapers and 40 inserts which should be plenty to get you through with washing every 2 days.

Hope this helps. If you can visit a CD store and see the diapers that really helps too!

  • This is also my first LO & I really want to CD. In the beginning I didnt think there was much to it and then I realized that there is a lot more than I thought. But, what really helped me was all the youtube videos. I had to kinda search around for some really good ones but it was worth it! Her videos really reassured me that I can do this.. she goes over everything right from the beginning.

Also, I just wanted to say... you are supposed to flush baby's poop down the toilet even when using disposables.

  • I think we're going to do a CD service in my city. They deliver them and pick them up every week. No washing, scraping, etc.

I cant deal with poo in the washer either (would have trouble putting normal clothes in there afterwards - Im sure its just my hang-up, but hey... ), nor the hassle of washing every other day just for that...

I also like the idea that Im not committed to anything. If I hate CDing, I can quit. If I find I love it, I can quit and buy some of my own.

  • We didn't start CDing until our son was a little over the year so I never cloth diapered a newborn.  By the time we started cloth diapering, we bought all one-size pocket diapers and they have fit him since.  It wasn't a huge expense -- I bought a few diapers each month until we had a full stash.  I stalked sales and found good deals on diaper swappers.  I spent probably about $500 or so and that's it... all those diapers can now be used on our subsequent children.  Also you really don't have to deal with poop.  You turn the diaper over the toilet and it plops right off.  I do the same even if our son is in a disposable (which is what you're supposed to do)... otherwise the stink is just NASTY.

It honestly doesn't take that much time... believe me, I work FT outside of the home and still managed to do it.  I spend maybe 30 minutes a week stuffing diapers while I watch TV... most of the time your washing machine does all of the work.

If you're really overwhelmed you can always wait to start CDing after the newborn stage.  That's what we plan on doing with this next baby because I don't want to invest in a newborn stash.  We plan on just starting to use all of the one-size pocket diapers we have once the baby starts to fit them (probably around 4 or so months when they're about 12 or so lbs).

FWIW: We have been really happy with our diapers -- we use a mix of fuzzi bunz and BG 3.0/ BG 4.0.

i have heard really good things about the trial at Jillian's Drawers.  If it doesnt work out for you, you can get all of your deposit back (minus $10).

With all that said, it's your decision and don't let anyone pressure you either way.  Good luck!!

  • It really is a lot less expensive in the long run, especially if you go with a OS diaper. We used cloth from the time DD was about 4 months old until just past 1 year.  We started late because I had never considered it an option until after she was born and I stopped just after 1 year because once I started back to work full time with a 1 hour drive each way I was having trouble keeping up with everything so the diaper laundry was the first to get cut.  I have lots of diapers in decent shape to use with #2 now so I will definitely get my money's worth.  Personally, I would consider a diaper service or disposables until baby is big enough to fit in a one size to avoid buying a newborn stash, prefolds are also a cheap option but I was never a fan myself.  When I decided to try CD I actually found a local store that offered a trial box so I got to use a few different kinds before I spent the money.  as another poster mentioned, Jillian's Drawers offers something similar, I would suggest giving it a trial run.

  • I've CD'd 2 under 2 and am expecting baby #3 who will be in CDs too. When I was pregnant with #1 and was looking into CDing I almost decided not to, just because everything seem so overwhelming. DH was the one who convinced me to stick with my original decision and I'm so glad he did.

I started with the newborn size of green mountain prefolds and the next size up along with 4 thirsties covers in each of those sizes. I also bought a garbage pail to use as my diaper pail (with a swinging top so we can just throw diapers in!) and 2 wetbags. We eventually bought a handful of bumgenius diapers for night time. I eventually bought the next 2 sizes up in the green mountain prefolds as DD grew. My DD is now potty trained.  For all of my diapers, covers, accessories, etc. I've spent maybe $700 total. DS is now using all of those diapers and baby #3 will also.

I thought I read somewhere that diapering costs somewhere around $2,000 per child, so I figure, we've saved a bunch!

The right way is the way that works for you. If you do decide to CD, start small and get a diaper sprayer Big Smile

  • Even with the upfront cost you'll save thousands over disposables. You can buy used, on sale, and get "seconds" from many stores.  CDing doesn't have to be expensive.  If you're looking at the Bump CD board you'll get a skewed view, IMO.  While there is a LOT of really awesome info over there several of those ladies buy and buy and BUY CD's like crazy.  You don't have to buy that many, really.

I would suggest prefolds for the newborn stage and then invest in some one size diapers.  Those will fit from about 12-14 lbs through potty training.  My DS is still wearing the diapers he wore at 4 months old (he's 26 months now).  Yes, some have worn out and I've had to replace them but I always buy on sale or used.

The washing is super easy, IMO.  We currently wash every 3rd day but we were washing every other day for a long time.  It just becomes part of your routine.

I'm not going to convince you if you have your heart set against it but please give it a shot.  Your wallet and the environment will thank you :)

That's fine that it's not for you but it's pretty true that you will have more blowouts with disposables than with cloth AND with cloth the poop goes in the toilet so there's veeeery little that actually goes into the wash.

I know it's not for everyone but don't spread false facts to try to justify your point.

  • We are going to CD as soon as LO is out of the 'newborn' CD sizes, or big enough to fit on the one we have. I have some biodegradable newborn diapers for newborn, that I love...I babysit for a family that used and love them. I will be getting a sprayer that you connect to the toilet. I agree CD isn't for everyone, don't feel bad if its not for you! I LOVE the idea but once I. Actually get into it I might not like it anymore, doubt it but it could happen? :)

  • We use disposables and I'm not against CDing, it's just not for us. That said, neither or my kids have ever had a diaper rash and I have only had to deal with TWO blowouts ever, both my son when he was a NB, my daughter never had a blowout. I'm saying this because I don't think these things should be used in a pro/con argument. Every kid is different and will react differently to different things.
