1st Trimester

When to go in for first apt?!

My fiance and I just recently found out we're expecting (yikes, the wedding's only 6 wks away....couldn't we have just waited until then to make a baby?!!!).

I'm 7 wks, last week I went in to Planned Parenthood to have a dating ultrasound done because I really had no clue how far along I was. I currently do not have pregnancy health coverage on my insurance, which is why I went into PP because it's a lot cheaper. My fiance, however, has great insurance and I'd like to wait to go into the doc until we're married to get covered under his insurance but I'll be at 13 weeks. Is this too late to go in for my first appointment? I called into my doctor last week and they told me that at 8 weeks they just do an ultrasound to see how far along you are (but I just did that at PP) and make sure the baby's healthy. It's not until weeks 10-16 that they do all of the 'important' stuff. So do you guys think I'm safe to wait until I'm married to go in so we don't have to pay a ton of money?!

  • How about going to get the marriage license and doing justice of the peace on the quiet?  You could have good insurance and less drama.  No one needs to know.

This.  I actually was married before the "real" ceremony (although only by a few hours...long story) and it was fine.  I would save yourself the drama and do that.  Plus it takes time for all the paper work to get together and you don't want to be waiting on the insurance company to get your member info and benefits to you.

  • We've thought about it and I keep going back and forth on it. Ideally, I don't want to but yes, it would make things much easier. Also, he's in the military and is stationed elsewhere so our time together is limited before the wedding. Ohhh the joys!! He'll also be deployed when the baby is born :( The timing of this pregnancy couldn't be worse, but I just keep telling myself there's a reason for it!
  • I don't think 13 weeks is too long to wait if you've already had an u/s to date the pregnancy and confirm heartbeat. I didn't even know I was pregnant with my second until I was somewhere around 11 weeks, pretty much missed the whole first tri and by the time I had my ultrasound to date the pregnancy it was time for a NT scan which we opted out of. Unless it just makes you feel better to go to your OB earlier, I would think it's fine to wait until you're married. HTH!
