RePOST: Diagnosed twice with a blighted ovum, but still too early??

I was diagnosed first when I was only 5 weeks pregnant. At the time I had no idea whatsoever that this might be too early to tell, and believed my midwife and grieved the pregnancy (she was going from an abdominal ultrasound only, no bloodwork, no exam).  I went to see another dr. to discuss my options. He performed a trans vaginal ultrasound and seemed to think that everything might work out fine, we just had to wait and see.He also did bloodwork. My beta's didn't quite double but they were high and rose significantly. (from around 10,000 to around 15,000)The following week I was visiting my mom and saw a dr. in her town. She did a trans vaginal ultra and dated me at 6 weeks. She also diagnosed a blighted ovum because all she could see was an empty gestational sac. She did no blood work. She said I could wait and have another ultrasound but that she saw very little hope. Told me to prepare to miscarry.I flew home immediately and we told our family that the pregnancy was over Yesterday I saw my Dr. here at home again. The gestational sac is still empty, but he still thinks that there is hope. He repeated my blood test and will sit down with me to go over results tomorrow. I am still measuring in my 6th week, which is about right. I originally thought I was further along, but have had confusion about my dates + weird cyclesI have no bleeding, no cramping and feel very pregnant.  I have been obsessively searching the web and have found stories with positive and negative outcomes. The waiting is killing me. I have grieved this loss twice and feel very confused. Thank you so much in advance for your thoughts. I know you ladies can't diagnose anything, but I'd love to hear if anyone has a similar story or what you might think. I also posted this on the loss board, fyi

  • How long ago did you get a positive pregnancy test?

  • August 24th, faint line

I was not testing every day, not charting. The only day that we had sex that make sense was on Aug. 5th. I know I could have o'd as long as 5 days after that. I am also bf'ing and have had strange cycles since dd was born so my dates may be funny. That is probably contributing to the confusion

  • I'm very sorry, but I don't think there's any way that's viable.  We saw a second sac Your betas aren't doubling and you should be able to see a heart beat at this point.

  • Unfortunately with a blighted ovum, your body can still feel like you are pregnant, your betas can continue to rise, and you can feel like nothing is wrong.  I had a blighted ovum in March, and I never had any bleeding, cramping, or any signs that there were problems, until I went for my u/s and I was behind 2 weeks.  We also thought we could have just miscalculated, but when we went back 2 weeks later, there was just an empty gestational sac, it had not been progressing.  Also, if you had an u/s while in your mom's town and you were measuring 6 weeks, and you just had another u/s and are still measuring 6 weeks, that is not a good sign.  I'm very sorry, unfortunately I know how frustrating, painful, and confusing this is.  I wish you the best and you are in my thoughts.

ETA: I also would like to ask for you to please not ask questions about a possible miscarriage on the Miscarriage / Pregnancy Loss board, because from experience, it is very painful to be on that board and have someone come there and ask if they are having a miscarriage.  The ladies on that board are currently going through a loss and unfortunately do not have any positive answers for you.  I hope you do not have to join their board, but if you do, it is a wonderful community with a lot of support for women currently going through a loss, and those who are still grieving from one as well.

  • From what I understand, your dr. can suspect a blighted ovum but cannot confirm it until the gest. sac reaches a certain size (usually around 8 weeks). We found out we have a blighted ovum at 8 weeks. I had an u/s at 6, and we could not see anything in the sac but the doctor was not concerned at all because it was "too early".

Good luck and hope things turn around for you.

  • You should read the stories on misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com if you haven't already. There are lots of great stories on there. I am going through something similar (not blighted ovum but only yolk sac/no HB yet/measuring weeks behind) so I know that the waiting is terrible! I pray things turn out okay for you!

Thank you! I have discovered that site and it really gives me hope!

I wish the best for you as well. The waiting is truly the worst!
