What to use for teething pain?

I remember hearing a few months ago there was some report on how Baby Orajel is bad, so I threw out the tube we had. Well, H is getting her bottom teeth and last night one of them finally broke the skin but she is a BEAST today.

I have a couple teethers that you stick in the fridge but she won't hold on to them for very long and I just resorted to a half dose of baby tylenol to calm her down enough for her nap (an hour overdue). Is there anything I else I can use? Is the Baby Orajel Naturals any better than the regular stuff or is it all bad?

Re: What to use for teething pain?

  • I used tylenol or motrin for teething pain. Orajel naturals doesn't contain benzocaine (the problematic ingredient in regular orajel), but I'm still suspicious. It says it contains clove oil. I have no idea if that works and/or is safe. I'm very cautious about giving M medications or homeopathic remedies unless I do a lot of research first. Homeopathic or "natural" doesn't necessarily mean safe.

  • We tried some things like cold (not frozen) teethers, but ibuprofen was our best friend for teething. If you're doing a half dose of Tylenol, though, (and you consider that something you're "resorting to"), it sounds like you and I probably have different comfort levels with using medication.

  • I don't like medicating my kids, at all. When it comes to Orajel, my philosophy is "better miserable than dead," but I have given Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen, you can switch off b/w the 2. you need to give the full dosage though; ask your pedi how much that is b/c they go by weight more than by age.

I have also given this https://www.amazon.com/Boiron-Camilia-Teething-Relief-20-dose/dp/B000XHGTPK/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1316540332&sr=8-31 but it didn't do anything for DS (did not know about it for DD).

try a teething biscuit (if she can have wheat) and freezing wet wash clothes and then letting her suck on them

  • We give motrin or tylenol when they are trying to sleep since I found that to be the most problematic time of day for us with teething.
  • We've found motrin works way better for teething than tylenol. But, you have to give the full dose.
  • I'm another fan of motrin and tylenol here. Honestly, the frozen washcloths and teethers only go so far and he needed to sleep. I was a little worried that I was relying on it too much, but even Dr. Sears says its ok to use for teething pain.

I also found that once it broke through, we usually got a break the next day or so.

  • we found motrin worked better for teething pain than tylenol but I can't remember the age when you can start giving motrin.

I felt so bad for DD because I know how minor teeth pain feels and I can't imagine what it feels like to have one pushing through my gum. The tylenol or motrin took effect pretty quickly and it would make her be a different baby!

  • Thanks ladies. I think I will need to make a trip out for some motrin. I'm not opposed to using a pain reliever, but I'm generally not a person who gives it at any ache, pain or sleepless night. But teething is a worthy situation! :)

  • Motrin is the only thing that has ever worked for both of my kids, and it's only half working for DD right now.  I've found that she really doesn't tolerate pain well at all though (the tiniest bumps make her wail), so she might be extra sensitive to teething pain.

  • We've used tylenol, orajel naturals and humphrey's teething pellets (not all at once, mind you) and they all work in their own fashion.  I wouldn't be afraid of trying something ,it may not be right for your child, or it may work wonders.  I'm not a person that medicates myself, but you have appreciate that this is usually their first real sensation to pain and they don't have anything else to compare it to. Also, simply because I've heard the benzocaine thing over and over, it should be noted that it becomes a problem only when parents have the theory that "if a little is good a lot is better", and over medicate their kids.  We all know what it's like to have a child you cannot console.  If they think giving more orajel in the answer then adverse outcomes will occur.  Same with tylenol.  They changed the dosing because parents weren't reading labels correctly and overdosing their kids.  It is a reminder that OTC medication can be harmful as well but any medication, OTC or prescription, is as safe as it can be given you follow the directions and are not allergic.

This is what we do to ensure a great (well OK) night's sleep for all during the worst of the teething.

I highly recommend!!
