How do you know what kind of twins you are having

My husband and I found out at the hospital that we were having two babies two days before my first appointment with the midwife. At the hospital they told us nothing except, no, you aren't having a miscariage you are having twins and they both have a heart beat. So when we went in for our first appointment to see the midwife we told her the news. During the ultrasound the tech told us that she thought they would be fraternal twins and that it looked like they would each have their own placenta and sac.

My question is how do you know for sure and what is all this di/di and mo/di that I'm reading about on the boards?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

with same sex twins there is no way to know if they are fraternal or ID, unless they are sharing a sack - since it can appear that they have one placenta, when it's really 2 that fused, etc.... you can't know until they are born and you do testing- or if they have different blood types.

Most di/di (meaning 2 placentas and 2 sacs) are fraternal 1:9 are ID. We were pretty sure that ours were fraternal since we conceived on Clomid. We knew in the hospital for sure that they were fraternal because 1.) the looked nothing alike, 2.) they have different blood types (A+ and B+).

While it is true that 1:9 di/di twins are fraternal, we were suprised to find out our girls are ID. They had seperate sacs, frat twins run in our family, and we didn't think our girls looked ID but DNA testing proved us wrong

Are you still planning to see a midwife? With twins, it would be best to also have an OB on board for the pregnancy.

thanks ladies. I seem to be worried all the time . Every little pain, I find that I'm scared that something is happening to one of the babies. Is that normal? I don't know if it's the stories of bedrest or the stories of babies in NICU that worries me more. I can't imagine the thought of leaving the hospital without my babies. Also, I'm a paralegal in a law firm, if I go on bedrest, will the attorney hold my job for me. I know that he loves me and he's like a father to me but come on, it's a small office, weeks of bedrest could equal me not having a job to return to after the babies are born. I'm sorry, I seem to be rambling on and on. I do that these days.

Oh no, I do not plan on seeing a midwife. My ob is at Ochsner and they forced me to see a midwife before my ob. I was so mad. I had seen my ob for years, he delivered my daughter. I wanted my tubes tied after she was born, seeing as how we had three children and thought our family was complete. I told him if I ever got pregnant he would be paying for that babies education.

I cried when they told me I had to see a midwife. My first appointment with my ob is set for Oct. 7th. I can't wait to go in. I'm taking an itemized bill to him and telling him he has two babies to pay for their private school education.

Congrats on the twins! They, too, run in my family like some of the other posters adn our bosy are fraternal. One came out looking like me (brown hair/brown eyes) and one came out like my husband (blond hair/blue eyes). The advice I was given by family is that the first 6 months with twins or any multiples is the hardest. After that, it's gets easier and easier. Our twins will be 2 on Dec. 31st and it is true, they are getting easier and easier to take care of.

Your worries are totally normal! I was a basket case the first 12 weeks wondering if they were ok, or even still in there! I felt soooo much better after my 12 wk u/s. You just need to think positive and try not to dwell on it, which I did all the time, lol. Good luck!

Did you already have your tubes tied when you got pregnant with the twins? Twins would be quite a shock after that!

I'm in Baton Rouge. My 8 year old son and 6 year old daughter were born at Baton Rouge General. This will be our first birthing experience at Ochsner but not our first experience with Ochsner. Our daughter had heart surgery in January at Ochsner in New Orleans and she's good as new. How did you like it?

You'll find that the board is pretty evenly split in terms of NICU time v. take home babies. Try not to let your fears get the best of you just yet.

Something you said reminded me of something that I felt, I wanted just one more baby, ONE not two. So when they told me I was pregnant with twins, it came as such a shock and I was like, "I just wanted one baby, not two." I loved each so much, and I also instantly didn't want anything to happen to either of them. It took me a long time to come to the realization that we were definitely having two babies, then it took even longer for me to accept that and be thankful. (I know it sounds bad, but it happened).

Now that I have my three we are definitely done, and I wouldn't trade my little girl and two little boys in for the world.

no my doctor didn't want to tie my tubes. he said we could change our mind because we were so young. I had my son at 25 and my daughter at 28 so I knew I was done. Funny thing is when I found out I was pregnant it took less than 24 hours for me to get excited and I couldn't stop smiling after I found out it was twins (until I started reading).

I can't wait to find out what we are having.

The labor and delivery in Baton Rouge is brand new!!!! Kind of exciting.

I woke up Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. turned to my husband and told him I want Parkway. The craving hasn't gone away yet!!! I will be going to N.O. soon to get me some!!! Maybe I'll schedule a lunch meeting with our son's godparents who happen to live in New Orleans just so I can go.

We used to be in NO all the time before Katrina hit and my husband's family left town. Most never came home. =(. Now they live in TN, SC, NY. Great for vacations but miss the family.

We tried to enduce labor with our son and daughter by driving down in lakeview ... never worked.

knowing we had the option we had thrown the idea around a time or two (more my husband than me) but never decided to do it.

Now that I am pregnant, I want to exerpience it all the way I didn't in the past. I want to go into labor (although I know that may not be an option, I am determined to try), and I want to take it easy and lay around and use the "I'm pregnant" excuse.

I have to admit I am looking forward to all the extra ultrasounds!!

I delivered at Ochsner main campus. I exclusively saw their MFM department. Dr. Longo was fantastic. Fairly sure she doesn't go to BR but she was the best. I had ultrasounds every 2 weeks and delivered complication free at 37w 1d via scheduled c-section, no NICU time.

I had no idea that Ochsner had any midwives on staff and I would not settle for seeing one in a twin pregnancy. I'm not sure if you need a referral to be seen in MFM but I would try because they are specialists at high risk pregnancies. And, acc to my doctor, any twin pregnancy is high risk.

Thank you. when I saw the midwife on September 6th I explained to her that I was not happy and did not feel comfortable seeing anyone other than my ob (Dr. Durel) who is also amazing. she assured me that since I would be having twins and a "high risk" pregnancy that each of my appointments would be with him from that moment on. I will see him on October 7th. I never had to see a midwife before and I wasn't about to start. If that was my only option I would have been finding another ob. Luckily, I got my way.

I'm not discounting your feelings, but I don't understand the hang up about having to see a midwife. Why would you not get to know him/her before deciding to see a different OB? Not that it matters at this point, but why not give her the benefit of the doubt? They're highly trained, professional, and capable of maternity care.

The midwife I saw was very nice, just not what I wanted. I have a relationship built with my ob. I had issues when I was pregnant with my daugher with too much amniotic fluid and saw him every week from 19 weeks on. I've had issues with pre-cancer cells in the past and I've been with him through it all, not to mention the fact that we attend same church, and many crawfish boils together so I just wanted "MY" ob.

I've heard great things about the midwife that I saw at Ochsner, it just wasn't what I wanted for me and my pregnancy.

At my very first u/s (at 11w5d) when we found out we were having twins, I asked the tech if she could tell if they were ID or frat--I was in shock and not sure what else to ask about! She said, "Well, you see how they each have two sacs around them? That means they are di/di twins and it's complicated but 9 times out of 10 that means they're fraternal." At delivery the nurse told me I had one placenta but really, the two had fused.

Ditto what Goldie said. my plan was to get DNA testing done if there was any doubt, but my boys have always looked very different so we know they're fraternal.

I think a lot of us feel uncomfortable seeing a midwife for a high-risk (multiples) pregnancy. I would be comfortable seeing one if I had a low-risk singleton pregnancy, but definitely not with twins.
