March 2012 Moms

Hmm..well that dr's appt was not awesome.

I feel like crying after my check up today. I stepped on the scale and almost fell over from shock. 10 pounds. In four weeks. W.T.F. I even peed and took my shoes off and it only took off two pounds. Then the OB, who is sooo nice about everything, kindly asked if maybe there were some celebrations or something going on that would account for my weight gain. Nope. So she said didn't "want to make me feel like she was picking on me" but that she's concerned just because at my weight I may be at increased risk for GD in 13 weeks when I do the glucose test. Great. So basically I'm fat. A big fat fatty.

Then, she tried to get a heartbeat on the doppler and couldn't so she had to get the u/s machine out and obviously that sent me into panic mode. Thank god we saw Baby H moving around and fine in there! Happy to get an unexpected u/s but its not as fun when you are worried about finding a heart beat.

So basically, I need to get back to working out and watch what I eat. I just feel that its sooo hard for me to find the time to work out. I'm dead tired after work and to work out before work I will need to get up at 5am, and with not getting good sleep because of peeing and being uncomfortable that time just seems insane to me. Sigh.

  • I went to the doc today too and I'm up 9lbs in 4 weeks myself. I hadn't gained anything at week 11, and I have no idea how it happened. I eat 3 squares a day and sometimes a snack, but honestly, I don't feel like I eat that much more than before my BFP. I even exercise everyday. I'm totally feeling like a fat a$$.
  • Mine didnt' say anything about the weight gain last time, but I was up 6 in 4 weeks (and had gained from my BFP to my 9 week apointment).   I also had sugar in my urine and a slightly elevated blood sugar.  My dr. didnt' seem overly concerned, but I need to do my glucose screening at the next appointment (18 weeks).   It is frustrating, and hard not to worry!! Sorry your appointment didn't go great, but so glad you got to see the little peanut!

  • Same thing happened to me! By week 12, I had gained 2 lbs, then at week 15, I checked my weight at home and I was up another 6lbs, week 16, I'm at 10lbs total. And I can tell in my clothes. I was like crap! This kid is killing me cause I'm hungry 24/7!! Guess, I'm gonna have to work through the lingering nausea and fatigue and start going for daily walks... even just short ones to get me started!

  • Oh, I'm so sorry!  Maybe some of it is bloat and you'll be just fine next time.  I've tried stocking only healthy snacks lately because I have no will power.  Greek yogurt, graham crackers with a little peanut butter, apples.... Don't worry too much.  Some people gain like 50 lbs and then shed it all shortly after baby.  I knew one woman who gained 90!  She was high risk so couldn't do much of anything.  She did Body for Life challenge when LO was 6 months and won!

  • It's completely understandable. I'm on my feet all.day. (Seriously, I get to sit down when I eat and maybe once more later in the day... I take pee breaks just to sit for a minute. :) and when I get home at night, the last thing I want to do is go for a walk. I don't even get to eat that much throughout the day, yet I'm still gaining weight... up 4 lbs since last month, eating less that I was at that appointment! Who knows. Every body is different. I just hope you don't develop GD. :(

  • I know how hard the scale can be when pregnant.  I am up 20 pounds and literally gained 10-12 almost immediately upon learning I was pregnant.  The same thing happened with my son.  If it helps any, I did not have GD with my son, and I'm hopeful that I don't have it this time either.  I was just very upfront with my doc about this and said it wasn't an indication of my food choices (especially since with my son I threw up every morning and I've been so nauseated this time I've barely eaten and can now only stomach Lucky Charms or Raisin Bran).  With my son it was very tough to feel like I was gaining way more than everyone else, and it's still tough now, but I just try to remember that my body is doing what it feels like it has to do.

Also did they run another thyroid test?  Mine was low in my first trimester, which definitely didn't help the weight gain situation.

  • I would *try* not to stress over it too much.  I had a 10 lb weight gain at the appointment before last, but when I went to my next appointment a month later, I had actually LOST 3 pounds.  I didn't improve my eating habits- if anything they got worse because I was only eating fast and frozen food- anything I didn't have to spend time prepping, because prepping food made me ill.  After my large gain the midwife asked me to keep a food diary, so you may try that and see if it helps.  Of course, working out is always good- maybe find a prenatal yoga class or DVD.  You may find the yoga is relaxing, and will help you sleep.

I also had trouble waking in the middle of the night to pee. (Still do sometimes)  I finally decided no liquids two hours before bed.  It helped a lot- unless I cheat (sometimes I am SO thirsty) I can usually sleep 4-6 hours through.  Which is a huge improvement ^_^  I do make sure to get plenty of liquids through the day, and usually drink a large glass of water or milk at that 2 hour mark.

  • I feel your pain. I dread the scale at each appt. At 8 weeks pg I had gained 6 lbs and at 12 weeks I gained another 4 lbs so I'm up 10 lbs total already. I have to admit I've been too tired to exercise much and I've probably been eating about twice as much as usual because I get extremely intesnse hunger pains just about every hour.

I've been trying to buckle down and eat healthier snacks if I'm going to be eating more, but it's so hard to ignore the cravings for salty foods and fast food.

  • Sheena I'm sorry you had such a sucky appointment.  But it may just be the baby that caused the jump in your weight.

I was talking with a former coworker last week and she told me when she was pregnant she gained a lot of weight suddenly.  She hadn't changed her eating or exercise habits and insisted it wasn't her fault (cause the doctor was like what the heck have you been eating).  At the next appointment the same thing happened, another big jump in weight that the doctor finally blamed on the baby.

Granted this was over 30 years ago when she was pregnant but maybe the same thing is happening to you.

  • Sorry for the sh!t appt. I am fully expecting to be lectured at one of my next appointments for the same thing. I have no idea what I weigh (get on scales backward), but I'm not allowed to exercise at all anymore. Not. Even. Walking! So I fully expect to reach whale proportions here soon :) I'm pretty small to begin with, but I work my a$$ off to keep it that way... As soon as I stop. Pow! Fatty.
  • Don't be so hard on yourself.  It is not uncommon to not get a heartbeat on the doppler before like 15-16 wks. Just be very careful what you eat.  I am diabetic going into this pregnancy so I have to be very careful. I feel like I'm huge already but my DH keeps assuring me that I look perfect (I think sometimes he needs his eyes checked).  Good luck.

  • I'm sorry Sheen. *hugs* I bet everything is going to turn out just fine and you are so far from a fatty! I feel like I might get the same news when I get on the scale at my appointment tomorrow

I'm so glad Baby H is doing great though!! <3

  • Hugs to you and I am sorry! The good news is you got to see your baby!!!

My DR gave me the lecture too, she must have said five times during my appointment "watch your weight" "watch what your eating" and things like that. She is great otherwise, but really left me feeling like ... a big fat fatty! So I know how you feel. I have been trying to make better choices. I think the whole 1st trimester for me was one big fat carb fest.

  • Thanks ladies! <3 I'm feeling better today, and packed some healthy snacks for work as well. I think because of my struggle with weight (gained 70 pounds after HS, lost it all...gained some back) , which has been ongoing for 10 years now, it was my worst fear to gain to much too fast and when it happened I feel like I really let myself down. All I can do now is make better choices and let my body do what its going to do!
