Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Why do you stwich from formula to regular milk when they turn one?

I dont want to switch from bottles to sippie cups or from formula to regular milk! It makes feel that my baby is not a baby anymore and I dont want to feel that way. It makes me sad and depressing to know she growing so fast. I think this is going to be more difficult to me than her. But maybe if I understan the reason  behind it may me feel better

Re: Why do you stwich from formula to regular milk when they turn one?

  • Well for us, DS actually started to refuse his formula bottles (basically weaning himself, if that makes sense) right before 11mos. So we decided to start the transition from formula to milk by doing 50/50 mix first & he started drinking the bottles again. We had 1tub of formula left & took 1 month to use it up while transitioning. I dont miss cleaning bottles & mixing formula! ______I think it also had to do with nutrition, like since they are eating table foods now they should be getting most nutrition they need from food, but if your child doesn't eat well you could leave em' on formula, but switch to the next stage up (or if you switch to milk there are liquid vitamin supplements you can give). There's no 'rule' saying you have to switch to milk @1yr. Obviously its your child & just do what you feel is right for her. [Bumping from phone, sorry for lack of paragraphs]

  • Because they don't need it anymore.

If you want to keep buying formula go right ahead, but that won't magically stop your kid from growing up.

  • You don't have to - they can still benefit from it.  Everyone does it at one the same reason everyone started turning their kid around in the carseat at one, because the recommendations say (said, in the case of carseats) that you should do it until at least one.  For milk, it's "at least one" because they really really MUST HAVE the extra nutrition from the formula at least that long since they're unlikely to be eating enough solids before then, and there is a concern that people would switch to milk early just to save on cost.  (This is what I was told from a friend who is a doctor.)
