Ladies:

I'm stuck! Where did you start your search for a Daycare provider? Craigslist (Scary potentially????) the newspaper? I'm so lost!!!!

Hi! saw your post, and since I work in the field just wanted to offer help...you should start in your county's childcare council, they will usually have great resources, and there should be a website available that you can look up as to whether there have been regulations, etc, I know for new york, it's the Office of Child & Family Services (OCFS), I'm sure Ohio has something similar! And word of mouth is usually a pretty good start, or some school districts may actually be able to refer you to programs that have a good reputation, I know our school district will refer our facility because we have a great program.

in CT they have a state info line 211 and I was able to find a list of daycares. I just looked a 5 the other day and I'm sending my deposit for an infant spot. They fill up fast. Good luck

I used word of mouth. I asked around with my friends and where I work. I wanted to hear from experience of other moms.

I asked around at work to see who people used, then did some Googling to check out places close to work or home or that were a part of local churches. After I found one I was interested in online, we set up an appt to get a tour and ask our questions. We loved it, took an application, and have our spot held.

Also butting in...

When we started our research I just started on the internet -- there were several places listed and also a daycare finder - one of the bigger centers in my area was kinder.care. We were also new-ish to the area so I didnt know too many people - we went on some recommendations of others, I would also take note of signs in my local area and called them. Many said to call a month before I went back to work - some requried a deposit to hold a place.

We ended up going with an in home daycare and that has been the perfect fit due to DH's crazy schedule.

I dont think its too early to tour places. I also have a list of questions that I asked our current provider if you are interested.

I would say either word-of-mouth or checking the state licensing board. If you do go with the word-of-mouth method, though, still check with the board to ensure that the daycare (either center or "at-home") is, in fact, licensed, doesn't have any "strkes" against it and how many kids they are allowed to have at one time. When you first arrive to take a tour, do a quick mental count of how many kids ( esp. taking into account how many non-mobile infants are there) to ensure that they they only have the # they are licensed for. One rule of thumb the boards use for non-walking babies is that they can only have 2 for every 1 adult/worker. This is incase there is a fire, the most a person can do is grab 1 in each arm to run outside.
