Intro DS has Sensory Processing Disorder

Hi All.  I've only posted here once or twice before.  My Son Asher is 17 months old.  He has very severe protein allergies that have been diagnosed as Primary Immuno Deficency and Eosinophiloic Esophogitis.  We have known for some time now that he has been showing sensory seeking behaviors.  Our Pediatric allergist told us that it is common to see in kids with severe whole system allergies.  He has very recently been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and qualified for early intervention.

Its been very difficult to watch.  I used to be a special needs teacher, so I've seen lots of stuff like this in my day, but I think it makes it harder to deal with when its your own child.  Anyway, Asher starts services in a couple weeks and I'm really hoping that the therapies help him regulate himself.  It broke my heart when they told me that they could tell he had advanced receptive and expressive language skills, but that his sensory difficulties were getting in his way.

Re: Intro DS has Sensory Processing Disorder

  • I'm sorry -- that has to be really hard. I know you've already dealt with so much regarding his allergies.

I don't really have much to say, just "hi" to a familiar SN. :) Hopefully your background will be a real plus for both you and Asher as he gets going with EI!

  • Hi and welcome.  My oldest is also sensory seeking with a tad of sensory avoidance thrown in for good measure, it's exhausting.  I hope that therapy makes a world of difference for you.
  • Just wanted to say hi too.  My dd also has SPD.  We did just a small amount of therapy with her last year and she did amazingly well.  She was discharged for quite a while but after going through a detox with her and a lot of gut healing for her allergies, we are headed back to OT.  Allergies and SPD are so closely related and connected.  My hope is that once her allergies are finally healed (they are already starting to disappear) that the SPD will diminish some as well.  For now, we are back in OT and I know she will thrive there as she did in the past.  It truly does so much good for our kids.  Good luck!
