Sailing while PG?

I am TTC now and hoping for a BFP soon.

I crew on a couple of sailboats on Lake Michigan and race a couple nights a week late spring to fall (this is not casual cruising - it is work up a sweat work with a lot of leg and arm strength needed).  Anyone on here sail while PG?  Most of the women I sail with are >>40 and never had to deal with this.  The one that did was on bedrest, so the question never came up.

Re: Sailing while PG?

  • I don't sail, but DH does.  Races sailboats on Lake Erie, so I know exactly what you're talking about.  I talked to him about my going out (casual sailing) while PG.  We decided against it, b/c I'm not that comfortable on the water even when not PG.  He did say that women who are seasoned sailors, veteran racers, etc., have sailed while PG.  I imagine that you'd have to listen to your body and stop when you feel it becomes too much.  Also, talk to your doc if you have concerns.  But some women DH knows have sailed successfully while PG.  GL!

  • Thanks!  I am on 30-40 foot boats and only do nearshore racing, so I might try for a bit.  I don't think I would even consider it on dinghys.

  • I stopped sailing when I was pregnant.  I was just starting to learn foredeck when I got the BFP, and I didn't feel comfortable enough on the boat to continue sailing while pregnant.  Before foredeck, I was rail meat, which I didn't want to do with a big belly.  What is your position on the boat?  If it's just working up a sweat, I say go for it, as long as you feel comfortable.
  • I was the mastman for a few years and just moved back in the cockpit after a knee injury in the off season.  Now I mostly do pit and jib trim.  I did main trim before I moved to the mast.  I could never be foredeck - I am too much of a klutz!

I think you're fine to sail pregnant if you're doing pit and trimming.  Sticking to the cockpit seems pretty safe to me.  I did not feel comfortable doing foredeck, nor did I enjoy it.  The spinnaker is my worst nightmare.  I much preferred rail meat and beer wench!
