Trouble TTC

Anyone have allergies to meds?

So, not 3T related, but I had a bladder infection and was prescribed some anti-biotic with Sulfa in it.  Long story short, after I finished, I broke out in full body rash.  Literally, every part of my body (from neck down) is covered in a rash.  Thank goodness it isn't itchy.

Well, my doctor realized it was the sulfa (something like 15% of all people are allergic to it), and I asked what other medications had it because I wanted to make sure no IF meds had it...they don't.

That got me to thinking....how much would it suck if I broke out in a rash everytime I took clomid or some other IF med.  Has anyone ever had a reaction to their meds?  I just want to see if one seems to cause a reaction more than another.

Re: Anyone have allergies to meds?

  • I had an allergic reaction to Levaquin (Another antibiotic).  And I recently had an allergic reaction to some medicine they gave me during surgery I just had for a broken nose.  They couldn't trace which drug it was.  I never had any problem with my IF meds (knock on wood).  A lot of people are allergic to sulfa which is in a lot of antibiotics for UTIs.  I hope you feel better soon.  I remember how awful I felt. I had to be put on a steroid both times.  No fun.

  • I ended up in the ER about a month ago due to the same reaction (full body hives) to bactrim (a sulpha based antibiotic).  I also the same reaction to penicilin and erythromican.  I had a melt-down in the ER, because I knew I'd be starting IVF in a few weeks and was freaking out I'd have a similar reaction.  My RE and PCP have reviewed a course of action for when I need to go on an antibiotic right before egg retrieval, and will be watching me very closely.

  • I am also allergic to sulfa meds, some narcotics, and latex.  The only IF med I'm aware of that is a possible issue is Ganirelex, which contains latex.  Cetrotide is the substitute for it.

  • I have severe drug allergies to a multitude of different drugs. The fertility meds so far have been ok, but I don't think femara would be good for me.

  • I'm allergic to one of the standard meds used in anesthesia.  So, I had to have an alternative used for all of my retrievals.  The used the one I was allergic to during IVF #1 and I ended up on IV benedryl.

I also have a latex sensitivity and am allergic to most adhesives.  So, there are some issues with those.

  • Good Lord...as soon as you said "sulfa", I shivered. I had a severe reaction to Bactrim, which I also took for a UTI. It was the most horrible experience I have ever had!

I always worry that I will react to a fertility drug, but (::knock on wood::) I never have. Antibiotics have a much higher risk of allergice reactions. Most fertility drugs mimic normal hormones that we already have in our body, so allergic reaction is pretty rare.

  • I have been allergic to 2 different antibiotics and had a rash just like you described. I also had a reaction to reglan once and had tardive dyskensia- that was no fun at all!
