Okay, I never vent on here, but right now I have to let it out somewhere!
I just made a nice big salad. It took a long time because I wanted enough for us to have tonight for dinner (with chicken in it) and leftovers for me to have for lunch for the next couple of days. DH and I are eating and I hear a strange sound from the kitchen, where I'd left the salad on the counter. So I go investigate and one of our cats is on the counter with his head in the salad bowl! He knows he's in trouble, so he takes off running. He went through a phase several months ago of doing this, but hasn't stolen our food or gotten on the counter since maybe March. And seriously, what kind of cat steals salad?!
When I go into the kitchen to check that he did in fact eat our salad (there's lettuce pulled out of the bowl and lying on the counter, so there's no doubt about it), I discover the other cat has gotten on top of the fridge and knocked a bunch of magnets and things off. She also used to do this on a regular basis, but hasn't gotten up there in months. I'm just glad she didn't destroy the diaper cake that's been sitting up there since our shower!
So DH has locked them both up for the time being; they're having a kitty "time-out". And I'm sad about my salad, and DH thinks I'm being overly-cautious by saying I won't eat any of it, but I don't want to take the risk right now of getting sick. *sigh*

Re: Cat vent!
Uggh, sorry about your dinner. I am with you...I don't think I'd be eating anything that my cat's mouth *might* have touched.
Our kitty passed away last January (at the ripe old age of 17), but she was also a champion food stealer. I cannot begin to count the things that had to be thrown out because she got into them...including salad. I think she liked the dressing. Her greatest accomplishment were some pumpkin-chocolate chip muffins, which she gnawed through the plastic clamshell container (after knocking it off the counter) to get to.
I think I have the world's most odd cats - neither of them will eat anything but their cat food. I have even offered them fresh turkey, tuna, chicken, milk! They turn their noses up at everything, even other brands of cat food. Both of them!
I did have kitty drama 3 weeks ago though when one of my cats bit me. I started panicking about bacteria in the saliva. It ended up being fine, but I totally understand why you wouldn't want to eat something that any animal saliva could be on.
Thanks for the replies, ladies. Fortunately I got to eat the salad for dinner. I just was counting on having the leftovers for lunch over the next couple days, but DH will have it instead.
We've been surprised by what food he steals before. We had shepherd's pie way back and he stole from it - but he stole the mashed potatoes off the top and left the meat! Unusual little kitty cat.
They're now whining and scratching at the door. Maybe their time-out should be over. . .
