Nursing Bra Size?

When I delivered my twins my boobs got huge when the milk came in, like porn star freak show huge (I'm a 34G pre-pg so go figure).  How do you know what size nursing bra to buy not knowing how big your melons will get when the milk comes in?

IUI#1 - 05/20/08 = BFP! M/C - 14 weeks :( baby girl
IUI#2 - 01/07/09 = BFP!!! Twins!! Pre-term labor 20 weeks :( lost twin girls
IUI#3 - 1/31/10 = BFP!!!! M/C - 8wks :( again
IVF #1 - 7/2010 = c/p

Re: Nursing Bra Size?

  • I asked this recently too - I got recommendations to buy a few of the Medela bras which are sized S,M,L .  I also took a breastfeeding class where the instructor suggested buying the nursing tanks and just wearing that at first - I've never used one so can't recommend or not but thought it was an interesting option.

Thanks for the tips! Maybe I'll go the tank route first too.

  • Go and get fitted after your little one arrives and your milk comes in. The women at Motherhood/Pea in the Pod are really helpful.

  • I originally had a couple nursing bras and a sleep bra from Motherhood Maternity. I bought them during my pregnancy when my regular bras didn't fit anymore (I was 38DDD pre-pregnancy). They measured me, and said I was still the same size (even though my bras didn't fit!). They recommended going up to a 40DDD to give me a little extra room in the cup area and the band.

Well, that still didn't work. Later, I found out that DDD is as big as Motherhood sells, so I feel like they just talked me into something to get the sale.

Just last week, I found out the breastfeeding clinic/lactation group at the hospital I delivered at has a store where they sell bras and other breastfeeding stuff. I went in and got measured by them. Still measuring 38DDD (which still baffles me, since my boobs popped out of that size, and even the 40DDDs....I looked like I had 4 boobs all the time because half of each boob hung out of the top of the bra!). Then they explained that some brands just fit differently - the cut of the bra has a lot to do with it.

This store only carries Medela brand bras, so I tried one on and it was HEAVEN. Completely full coverage - there is no way these babies are spilling out! The clasps are easy to work one handed for nursing. Just wonderful. Even though I was measuring a smaller size, she had me try on a larger one - figuring I get bigger when I'm fuller with milk and such..) and the 38H is the winner. I also got a wonderful "comfort bra" which is like a sports bra with the clasps to open up to nurse. I sleep in that, and it's wonderful also. With the old one I got from Motherhood, one boob would always pop out when I slept on my side at night (it didn't hold me in at all since it was just a criss-cross front instead of something with full coverage and clasps). I highly recommend checking with your hospital that you will deliver at to see if your lactation consultant group has a store, and work with them on sizing and such. Having larger breasts, I can confidently say I recommend Medela brand over anything at Motherhood Maternity...based on my own experience!

    Good luck, hon!

  • i bought 2 bravado bras from target, but the largest size they have is XL, which fits me perfectly right now. i wish they had XXL b/c the bras are pretty comfy and i would like to have them post-pregnancy.

i also bought 3 bravado nursing tanks, which my SIL raved about, in size F/G (i'm a D/DD right now). SIL and lactation consultation at BFing class recommended buying a size up from what you are now.

    HTH!

  • I know I'm not quite ready to shop for a nursing bra just yet; but, as someone who also has big boobs (30G pre-preg, and yes they're real!), I typically run from things that are sized S,M,L. They NEVER ever fit me! I'll be shopping for the medela bras when my time comes.

Thanks for posting this! It's been really helpful!

  • The girls at destination maternity told me I should be able to fit my hand in my bra, so I went up one size...hope they fit!

  • I went up one size (from pregnancy) and pretty much lived in the Bravado nursing tanks. They're nice because the disposable pads fit in them well.

But, you're best bet is probably to wait until your milk comes in and then go try stuff on. Our local lactation center sold me a bra and they were really helpful fitting it. If nothing else it'll be a nice little get-away for you!
